LIGHTS, CAMERA, RED ROCKS!

Highlights from the 32nd Annual Sedona International Film Festival

Q& A with producers & actors of their short films

Each February, Sedona’s breathtaking red rock landscape becomes the backdrop for one of Arizona’s most anticipated events. The Sedona International Film Festival, now in its 32nd year, once again welcomed filmmakers, actors, musicians, and film lovers from around the world for nine days of storytelling, creativity, and connection.

With more than 150 films screened across multiple theaters throughout Sedona, the festival offered an impressive mix of documentaries, feature films, shorts, animation, and international cinema. The event has become one of the country’s premier independent film festivals, drawing thousands of attendees eager to discover new films and meet the talented people behind them.   According to Movie Maker Magazine, this festival is one of the “25 coolest Film Festivals in the World” for two consecutive years!  An IMPRESSIVE stat!

What makes this festival so cool?  One of the unique aspects is its intimate and welcoming atmosphere. Unlike larger festivals, Sedona provides audiences with the opportunity to engage directly with filmmakers and industry professionals. Nearly every screening is followed by a Q&A session, giving attendees insight into the creative process and the inspiration behind each film.

This year featured appearances by several well-known actors and entertainment figures, including Tim Daly, Amy Irving, Peter Riegert, Sharon Lawrence, and Michael O’Keefe, who participated in screenings, conversations, and special presentations throughout the week. These appearances added an exciting Hollywood touch.

Music played a standout role in the festival’s lineup as well.  Award-winning composer and Broadway songwriter Marc Shaiman—known for his work on films such as Hairspray and Sleepless in Seattle—headlined a special evening program celebrating the connection between film and music.  Broadway star Kerry Butler joined him for a sampling of songs from Hairspray, delighting the audience. The evening continued with In Love With Marilyn, a centennial tribute to Marilyn Monroe starring Samantha Stevens, adding another layer of glamour and nostalgia to an already memorable night.

Additionally, Right in the Eye, a live movie concert featuring the films of Georges Méliès and created by Jean-François Alcoléa, offered a uniquely captivating experience. This inventive performance blended live music with classic cinema, as musicians used an eclectic mix of instruments—including piano, guitar, and unusual elements like the aquaphone, theremin, and even plastic take-out lids—to create a rich, multi-layered soundscape that both surprised and delighted the audience.

The celebration culminated on the final Saturday evening with a special performance by Ramin Karimloo and the Broadgrass Band, whose remarkable career spans the West End, Broadway, and international stages—truly a special treat!

Beyond the screenings and special events, Sedona’s unique setting adds a magical dimension to the experience. Theaters throughout the town—from the Mary D. Fisher Theatre to the Sedona Performing Arts Center—host audiences against the stunning backdrop of red rock vistas. Restaurants and resorts become gathering places where filmmakers and attendees continue conversations….

The festival’s programming consistently highlights powerful storytelling from around the globe. This year’s films explored themes ranging from resilience and personal transformation to environmental issues and human connection. For many filmmakers, Sedona provides the perfect setting to premiere their work and engage with audiences who are passionate about independent film.

For Arizona’s growing film community, SIFF continues to be an important hub for creativity and collaboration. Local filmmakers, students, and industry professionals all find inspiration in the festival’s diverse programming and the opportunity to connect with others who share a passion for storytelling.
On a personal note, one of the true highlights was the opportunity to meet the film directors and actors—many of them emerging, incredibly talented creatives making their way through the festival circuit. Simply having a film accepted into the festival is a remarkable achievement. Out of approximately 1,500 submissions from around the world, only about 150 are selected, making each featured project all the more impressive.

It would also be impossible not to recognize the incredible hospitality of the dedicated Sedona volunteers, who year after year create such a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Special thanks as well to Executive Director Patrick Schweiss, whose personality and wit bring an added layer of energy and entertainment each evening.

Between the stunning scenery, unforgettable performances, and powerful storytelling, Sedona delivers a film festival experience unlike any other. One visit is all it takes to understand why audiences return year after year.  Be sure to mark your calendars for next year’s 33rd Annual Festival, taking place February 20–28, 2027.
