Meet the Heart Behind TCA: Principal Ms. O'Connell

Hi Shearwater Neighbors!
I’m Ms. O and I am honored to serve as the Principal of Trout Creek Academy, our incredible K–8 neighborhood school home to over 1,350 students and one very special mascot—Turbo the Terrapin! At TCA, we believe in blending academic excellence with joy and connection. Whether it’s holiday scavenger hunts, lunchroom karaoke, Friday movie days, or PTO-sponsored family nights, we love finding ways to make school a place students are excited to be.
I first moved to this area back in 2000, right around the time Bartram Trail High School opened. I’m originally from the Midwest, but Florida quickly won me over with its sunshine, warmth, and community spirit. Since then, I’ve watched this area grow into a vibrant, welcoming place—and I’m so grateful to now be serving the very community I’ve called home for over two decades.
I earned my bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, and later completed a Master of Arts in Educational Leadership from National Louis University. This year marks my 26th in education! I spent eight incredible years in the classroom and the last 17 in coaching, district-level, and administrative roles. Every student and staff member at TCA is part of my extended family. I genuinely love what I do—and the people I get to do it with.
We have such talented and well-rounded students here at TCA. From STEM clubs and music to art, athletics, service projects, and academic challenges—our kids continue to impress and inspire me. And their success wouldn’t be possible without the dedication and involvement of families in this neighborhood. Shearwater truly sets the bar for community support.
Speaking of support, we have a new mascot joining the TCA family this year: Turbo the Terrapin! I can’t wait to introduce our Terrapins to their speedy new friend. Who knows—we may need to host another inflatable race to test Turbo’s skills!
Some of my favorite memories at TCA so far include our very first Fall Festival. Watching kids laugh and families gather around campus made me smile with deep gratitude for the place I get to call work—and home. And every morning, I get to start my day by greeting students at the front entrance, playing fun music, and setting the tone for a joyful day of learning. Arrival time is, hands down, my favorite part of the school day.
Outside of school, you’ll often find me enjoying the First Coast Vendor Village at the amenity center, or admiring the turtle sculpture at the Kayak Outpost. I’m also looking forward to this year’s PTO Kickoff—it’s such a fun way to stay connected with families and build new traditions.
If you ever see me around the neighborhood, please don’t hesitate to say hello! My door at Trout Creek Academy is always open, and I encourage you to follow us on social media to stay in the loop on school news and events.
Let’s keep working together to make Shearwater a place where families, friendships, and futures continue to grow strong!
