Sedgefield Animal Hospital
Celebrating 50 years of caring for the pets—and people—of the Sedgefield community
As Sedgefield Animal Hospital prepares to celebrate its 50th anniversary this fall, the milestone is about far more than longevity. It's a celebration of generations of families who have trusted the practice with beloved pets through every stage of life.
Since purchasing the practice in 2022, Dr. Brooke Townsend has embraced its rich history while investing in advanced medical care, strengthening community partnerships, and preserving the personalized approach that has defined Sedgefield Animal Hospital for five decades.
"Your pets aren't just patients—they're family," she says. "Our goal is to partner with families to give their pets the highest quality of life from puppyhood and kittenhood through their gray-muzzled golden years."
A Legacy of Care
Founded in 1976, Sedgefield Animal Hospital has cared for countless pets through every stage of life. That continuity is something Dr. Townsend values deeply.
For Dr. Townsend, veterinary medicine has never been just a career. She often jokes that at four years old she declared she was going to be an "aminal doctor," and she never changed course. A Greensboro native and Grimsley High School graduate, she returned home after veterinary school and advanced training to build a career serving the community where she grew up.
Purchasing Sedgefield Animal Hospital in 2022 after working at the practice since 2003 allowed her to preserve one of the area's few remaining independently owned veterinary hospitals while continuing its long tradition of personalized care.
That philosophy shapes every aspect of the practice. Today, the hospital remains one of the few privately owned veterinary hospitals in Greensboro, offering clients a personalized experience in an era when many veterinary practices have become part of large corporate groups.
Dr. Townsend, along with fellow veterinarians Dr. Casey de Castro and Dr. Sara Talbot, all graduated from NC State's College of Veterinary Medicine and share a commitment to combining compassionate care with advanced medical expertise.
The hospital offers comprehensive wellness and preventive care, surgery, advanced dentistry, diagnostic imaging, pain management, an in-house laboratory, pharmacy services, bathing, and more—all designed to help families receive exceptional care close to home. In addition, the practice is committed to advancing the future of veterinary medicine through active participation in clinical research. These clinical trials give their clients the opportunity to explore innovative treatment options that are not yet widely available, while helping advance the science of veterinary medicine for future generations of pets.
Rooted in the Community
While medicine is at the heart of the practice, community service has always been part of its mission.
Sedgefield Animal Hospital proudly supports organizations including Red Dog Farm Animal Rescue, The Hayley Graves Foundation, and the Guilford County Sheriff's Department by providing medical care for its working K-9 officers.
That spirit of service extends well beyond the walls of the hospital. Following Hurricane Helene, Dr. Townsend and her team sponsored medical care for evacuated shelter animals, donated hundreds of pounds of dog food, and traveled to western North Carolina to provide veterinary assistance in communities affected by the storm.
Supporting local businesses and neighborhood organizations is equally important.
"We've been part of this community for 50 years," Dr. Townsend says. "Giving back is simply part of who we are."
Looking Ahead
While celebrating a remarkable milestone, Sedgefield Animal Hospital continues to grow.
Dr. Townsend recently expanded the hospital's advanced dental capabilities through additional training in root canal therapy for dogs and cats, allowing more local families access to specialized care without traveling to larger cities.
For her, however, innovation and technology are only part of the equation.
The practice's greatest strength continues to be the relationships built with clients over decades of caring for their pets. Many families who once brought in their first puppy now return with children of their own and a new generation of four-legged companions. Those long-standing connections are a reminder that veterinary medicine is ultimately about people as much as animals.
Celebrations
This October is all about festivities. Dr Townsend and Sedgefield Animal Hospital are both celebrating their 50th! They are excited to celebrate in true Sedgefield style with a party for their clients and the community. Everyone in the community is invited to join them at the practice on Saturday, Oct 3 from 11 am-2 pm for games, prizes, food, and a bounce castle.
As Sedgefield Animal Hospital looks toward its next 50 years, the mission remains unchanged: providing outstanding medicine, treating every patient like family, and continuing to serve the community that has supported the practice for half a century.
"Our pets give us unconditional love every day," Dr. Townsend says. "It's an incredible privilege to care for them and the families who love them."
