Mark and Kathy Whitesell have made good on a promise two decades in the making. “The first time I saw this neighborhood, I told Kathy, ‘One day I will live in a house like that on a golf course,’” Mark says. “It took twenty years, but here we are.” In August 2020, they moved into that very house—a longtime dream realized in Sedgefield.
Together for over 35 years, Mark and Kathy met during a summer at the beach, thanks to a friend of a friend. “We were both working in Myrtle Beach, and somehow everything lined up,” Kathy recalls.
Mark grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina, though his roots stretch back to McLeansville, where he was born on a 45-acre tobacco farm. Kathy hails from Rocky Mount, and after attending Peace College and earning her bachelor’s degree in Textile Management from NC State, she and Mark married in 1989. Jobs brought them to the Greensboro area, where they raised their sons, Chris and Tanner. Chris, 31, is now engaged to Grace Allard, who will soon join the family officially when they marry in May 2026.
Kathy works as the office manager for Borum Wade and Associates, P.A., while Mark owns and operates Rental Supply, Inc., a business he started in 1997. “It began with two Sedgefield legends—Jimmy and Willie Bullock—who were born and raised around the country club,” Mark says. After years of working alongside them, he eventually purchased the business and continues to serve the community today.
Deeply involved in both business and service, Mark supports local schools with rentals for various events and initiatives. “I’m especially proud of the Jamestown Pig Pickin’,” he says. “It raises funds for Family Services of the Piedmont, helping build safe and healthy families. I’ve chaired it six out of the thirteen years I’ve been involved.” He also serves on the board of the Sedgefield Angel Tree Helpers, a nonprofit that gives Christmas gifts to children and provides funding for Boys and Girls Club programs.
At home, the couple enjoys a slower pace. “I love quiet mornings on the back porch with Bleu,” Kathy says. Bleu, their English Yellow Lab, is very much part of the family. “He goes to work with me every day and should’ve been named Shadow,” Mark adds. “He’s always at my side. His job—along with his sister Stormy—is greeting every customer at the door.”
When they’re not working or walking Bleu around the neighborhood—or taking him for a ride in the golf cart—the Whitesells are often traveling. “Now that the boys are out of the house, we’ve been able to explore more of the world together,” Mark says. A recent highlight was a trip to Paris and London, including the Eiffel Tower summit and a ride through the Chunnel.
Though the couple has explored far beyond Greensboro, they’re quick to name local favorites. “We love the firepit at Grandover for live music,” says Mark. “It’s the best way to wind down with neighbors.” They’ve been longtime members of Sedgefield Country Club and still frequent it often. From Box Seat to Blue Rock Pizza to Full Moon Oyster Bar, they enjoy the full range of nearby dining spots. Kathy adds, “Southern Roots, Guilford on Main, and Soap Lady are some of my favorites.”
Family time remains a priority. Mark shares that Tanner, their younger son, works as a data visualization specialist at Mack TruckWorld after graduating from East Carolina University. “That makes us a house divided—NC State and ECU—but we make it work,” he laughs. Mark and Kathy have been NC State football season ticket holders since 1989 and take their RV to Raleigh for every home game. “We park on Thursdays and don’t leave until Sunday,” he says. “Now with Will Wade coaching basketball, we’ll be up there even more.”
What they love most about living in Sedgefield is simple: the peace, the community, and the ability to connect. “Taking the golf cart to visit friends, the Club, or just to the pool—that’s the kind of lifestyle we always imagined,” says Mark. Kathy agrees, adding, “It’s quiet and beautiful here. We love the resort feel and the way the neighborhood is so welcoming.”
