Cate LaFreniere
A lifelong resident and senior at Greens Farms Academy, Cate has grown up surrounded by the small-town warmth, walkability, and beachside beauty that make Rowayton feel like a close-knit family. From 4th of July parades to summer concerts at Bayley Beach, she’s embraced every tradition—and the commu
A Standout on the Field
Cate is a force in field hockey, where she shines as a dynamic midfielder for GFA. This past season, she captained the team and earned a sweeping set of accolades: team MVP, All-FAA, All-NEPSAC, and All–New England Region First Team. Her talent and leadership have not gone unnoticed—Cate is one of only five athletes recruited to join Amherst College’s field hockey program for the Class of 2030.
And while field hockey is her passion, Cate’s athletic ability extends well beyond the turf. Last year, she joined the track team for the first time and promptly set five school records (100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100, and 4x400). Not a bad debut for someone simply looking to try something new.
The Start of Something Big
Cate’s introduction to field hockey came from a simple desire to explore another sport after deciding soccer wasn’t the right fit. That willingness to try—and to embrace the unfamiliar—has been a defining thread throughout her athletic journey.
Her favorite moment so far? One for the GFA history books.
During her junior year NEPSAC championship game, the score remained locked at 0–0 until the final minutes. Cate stepped up with the decisive goal that put GFA ahead. Moments later, she and a teammate shut down New Hampton’s last attempt to tie the game, securing GFA’s first-ever NEPSAC championship.
“That moment was unbelievable,” she recalls. “I’ll never forget it.”
Resilience, Grit, and Growth
Cate’s success is even more impressive given the obstacles she’s overcome. During her freshman year, she broke her elbow—and later tore her ACL in the spring. Her sophomore year was spent almost entirely in recovery: 11 months of physical therapy, patience, and unwavering determination.
“Never give up,” Cate says. “It was tough at times, but I focused on the goal of getting back on the field. I didn’t let myself get too down or negative.”
Organization has also become one of her secret weapons. Cate plans her days—and sometimes her weeks—in advance, staying proactive about communication with teachers whenever schoolwork and sports collide.
Coaches, Community, and a Bright Future
A key influence in Cate’s development has been her longtime coach, Liz, who has guided her since 5th grade.
“She taught me the fundamentals—and also to love the game,” Cate says. “I’m so lucky to have played for her for so long.”
Looking ahead to Amherst, Cate’s goals are bold and ambitious: to help lead her new team to a NESCAC Championship and, perhaps one day, a Division III national title. Off the field, she envisions a meaningful career that contributes to society—and one day, a happy, healthy family of her own.
Words of Wisdom
Cate’s advice for younger Rowayton athletes is simple and sincere:
“Try new things, even if they feel uncomfortable at first. Have grit—things won’t always come easily, but the more effort you put in, the better the results.”
It’s guidance she embodies every day—and proof that with determination, a supportive community, and a love for challenge, incredible things are possible both on and off the field.
