Crafted with Heart: Meet Chatt Craftsman’s David Gambrell

A Riverview artisan with a teacher’s patience, a martial artist’s discipline, and a creator’s soul. From towering decks to custom-built dreams, David brings precision, kindness, and craftsmanship to every home he touches.

When you talk to David Gambrell for even a moment, you can hear it in his voice. He is a maker. He is a thinker. He is a quiet craftsman who believes a good day’s work should feel like purpose. As the owner of Chatt Craftsman, David has built a thriving business on skill, honesty, and the simple joy of turning a question of possibility into a moment of proud accomplishment.
David grew up in Dalton, Georgia as the youngest of five and spent his early years watching his older brother rise through the construction industry. His first professional life, however, was in martial arts. Years spent instructing gave him discipline, patience, and a sharp attention to detail that now shows up in every corner, seam, and line he builds. With a degree in education meant for teaching full time, David found that his background translated beautifully into mentoring the younger carpenters who occasionally join his crew.
Chatt Craftsman began with straightforward hands-on jobs such as decks, doors, and early finish work. Very quickly, David realized what truly inspired him. Unique projects. Creative puzzles. Anything made of wood. If a homeowner dreamed it, he wanted to bring it to life. Today his team tackles everything from decks and fences to custom built-ins, furniture, trim, and flooring. As David likes to say, “Basically anything made of wood, we can build.”
He manages all of this with a small but mighty team and one very loyal companion. Sampson, his thirteen-year-old dog, has been with him through every season of adulthood and often rides along for quotes and errands. Sampson is, by all accounts, the unofficial mascot of Chatt Craftsman.
Like any business that grows quickly, the journey has included a few plot twists. Running a company with a lean crew requires long days and careful balance. David admits that finding time to eat and sleep is sometimes the biggest challenge. The quiet moments on the porch with Sampson, the satisfaction of a completed project, and the trust of his customers keep him grounded.
There have been many moments to celebrate. One standout was the enormous three-story deck he and his helper built on Missionary Ridge. At nearly eleven hundred square feet and almost fifty feet off the ground at its highest point, it was completed in just over three weeks and stands as a stunning example of what thoughtful planning and steady craftsmanship can create.
Looking ahead, David hopes to grow the team, expand his workshop, and take on larger projects with even more creative possibilities. At the core of it all, his mission stays simple. Make beautiful things. Make them well. Make life easier and more enjoyable for the families he serves.
His advice for anyone dreaming up something new is timeless. “Even failing at chasing your own dreams is more fulfilling than being successful at chasing someone else’s.” Spoken like someone who builds a life the same way he builds a deck. Steady, intentional, and full of heart.
For Riverview neighbors ready to bring new life to their homes, David is ready to help turn your ideas into something real, something lasting, and something that makes your home feel even more like you.
