On Patrol with Otis
This lovable Cavapoo enjoys neighborhood walks, weekends on the water, and keeping a close watch on everyone he loves.
Hello, neighbors! My name is Otis, and I am a six-year-old Cavapoo. I joined the Domingue family after they brought me home from Ruston during COVID, which officially makes me a COVID baby. I may have entered their lives during an unusual time, but I quickly became an important part of the family.
My name was a group decision. Some family members say I was named after Otis from The Andy Griffith Show, but I prefer the idea that I was named after the legendary singer Otis Redding. It feels a little more distinguished, don’t you think?
I have many interests, but hunting is one of my greatest talents. Lizards and squirrels are my usual targets, although I have also discovered some unexpected visitors. Once, I found a snake in my grandmother’s bathroom. On another occasion, I located a possum in our courtyard. I take neighborhood security very seriously.
There are a few words that always get my attention: “walk,” “ride,” “camp,” and “boat.” Say any one of those, and I am ready for an adventure. I become especially excited when I see the mailroom keys or Mom’s iced coffee because both usually mean I get to go outside.
I love taking walks through the neighborhood and am so well trained that I can walk without a leash. Of course, all that exploring can be exhausting. Sometimes I need to stretch out on the cool mailroom floor and take a break before heading home. A fellow has to know his limits.
When I am not patrolling the neighborhood, you can often find me at our camp on False River. I love riding on the boat and even have my own life vest. I have attempted wakesurfing, although I am still perfecting my technique. I am always happy to jump into the lake and swim with family and friends or relax on the Lily Pad. Life on the water suits me.
At home, I consider myself the official greeter and security officer. I bark whenever someone walks past the front door, and I make sure the vacuum knows it is not welcome. Trash bags, however, are another story. Those things are suspicious, and I prefer to keep my distance.
I am extremely loyal, loving, soft, and cuddly. I also love giving people kisses. Other pets do not interest me very much because I am fairly certain I am a person, too. My family says I am extremely spoiled, but I prefer to think of myself as deeply appreciated.
When my family leaves home, I sometimes borrow one of Mom’s shoes or socks. It becomes my security blanket while I wait for everyone to return. Once they come home, they have to sneak around and retrieve it from me. I do not understand why they keep taking away the things I have so carefully protected.
One of my favorite occasions is when Mom hosts her mahjong friends. They are wonderful guests, especially because they sometimes slip me popcorn when Mom is not looking. I believe every gathering is better with snacks and a Cavapoo nearby.
Whether I am hunting lizards, guarding the house, riding on the boat, or cuddling with my family, I am happiest when I am close to the people I love.
