The Stories That Shape Us
In a year celebrating America’s story, Troy Allen Broussard makes his literary debut with a work of historical fiction that explores the people, divisions, and shared experiences that have shaped—and continue to shape—communities across the South.
Troy’s passion for literature in general and his affinity for creative writing in particular can be traced back the classroom setting at Eunice High School in the mid-1980s. He credits his esteemed English teacher, Carole Ann McCauley Fuselier, with recognizing his potential and aggressively challenging him to push himself creatively. Years later, her guidance and encouragement would ultimately lead to the release of his debut novel, Where Lies the Truth, a story deeply rooted in the people and culture of Acadiana.
Set in St. Landry Parish during the mid-1970s, Where Lies the Truth is a coming-of-age story layered with intrigue, unconventional humor, friendship, mystery, and the unique cultural complexities of southwest Louisiana. The story follows three childhood friends who stumble upon the aftermath of a brutal hate crime in their community, one bound in a conspiracy that resurfaces years later and leads them down a perilous path toward the truth.
What began nearly 15 years ago as a creative outlet gradually became something far more meaningful for Troy. Inspired by the people and experiences that shaped his upbringing in Acadiana, his novel explores how communities carry both beauty and brokenness across generations.
As America approaches its 250th anniversary this July, Troy believes stories rooted in truth and that inspire honest reflection still matter. Rather than avoiding difficult parts of our history, he hopes readers come away with a deeper understanding of one another and the shared experiences that shape us all.
One of the most rewarding parts of publishing the novel, he says, has been hearing from readers. Some connect deeply to the Acadiana setting and cultural references, while others are surprised by how certain relationships or moments in the story resonate with them personally.
Today, Troy balances his creative pursuits with his 33 year career as an attorney with Allen & Gooch and a full and active life in River Ranch, where he and his wife, Beth, live with their Vizsla, Isa, and their Siamese cat, Mr. Ying. Together, he and Beth enjoy spending time with their growing family, including their four children and their ten-month-old and newborn grandsons.
When he is not practicing law or writing, Troy and Beth enjoy traveling, both domestically and abroad. He also relishes spending time at his camp on Wilderness Lake, and when time permits, golfing, pickleball, hiking, playing the guitar and songwriting.
Troy welcomes feedback from neighbors who read the book, whether “good, bad, or ugly,” and remains deeply appreciative of the encouragement he has received from family, friends, and the many people who helped shape the project along the way.
Where Lies the Truth is available in Kindle, hardcover, and paperback formats through Amazon and BarnesandNoble.com.
