Mood by DMJ: Crafting Atmosphere, One Detail at a Time
In a world saturated with sameness, Mood by DMJ offers something beautifully different. Owners David “Montgomery” John and Bryce Glover opened their thoughtfully curated lifestyle boutique in March 2025 with one mission: to bring joy, beauty, and intention into their customers’ lives through flowers, fragrance, and carefully selected objects.
For Montgomery, the road to Mood was anything but conventional. A Lafayette native, he spent nearly six years studying to become a physician assistant before realizing that the creative spark he once had was fading.
“I started having what I thought were irrational fears that I was losing my creativity,” he recalls. “As time went on, I found myself drained and unfulfilled. Connecting with people has always been a core part of who I am. Once I took my tunnel vision goggles off, I realized there were other ways to do that while using my creative force.”
Returning home, Montgomery drew on his background in chemistry and design to launch DMJ Home Fragrance. It began in his garage with makeshift lab tables, papier mâché props, and endless scent trials. Along the way, he began collaborating with a small group of fragrance consultants, now lifelong friends, who have helped redefine some of the most iconic fragrance houses in the world, including Diptyque and Cire Trudon over the past fifteen years. The result: a clean-burning coconut wax candle line known for its toxin-free blends and bold, design-driven packaging.
What started as a side project quickly caught the attention of top boutiques including Caroline and Company, Kiki, The Queen Bee, March by Shane Griffin Designs, The Keeping Room, and Sophisticated Threads in Metairie. Today, Mood by DMJ is the only store in Lafayette where you can shop the full DMJ Home Fragrance collection in person, presented alongside curated goods in an immersive, design-forward setting.
“This lit a different fire in me,” Montgomery says. “I had never worked like this before.”
Meanwhile, Bryce was carving his own creative path. A Baton Rouge native with a background in hospitality and events, his passion had always been florals. During the stillness of 2020, he began arranging blooms for friends and family. That pastime evolved into The Bloom Room, a bespoke floral business that quickly captured the attention of several affluent families in Baton Rouge as well as the Bocage neighborhood. Though he later paused it to return to hospitality full-time, his creativity never waned.
When Montgomery approached him with the idea for Mood, Bryce was all in. “Partnering on this gave us a way to build something meaningful together,” Montgomery says.
The pair launched Mood by DMJ in the heart of Lafayette’s Oil Center, next door to Antoni’s Italian Café, blending Montgomery’s design sensibility and fragrance brand with Bryce’s floral and styling expertise. Shortly after opening, they were invited to complete a floral installation in New York City for artist Ashley Longshore’s exhibition at Focus Art Fair.
Step inside Mood, and you will find more than candles and flowers. The boutique is an ever-evolving trove of fine fragrance, handblown glass, linens, artwork, tabletop objects, and thoughtful gifts. It is the kind of space where customers do not just shop, they explore, pause, and feel.
“We hear it all the time,” Montgomery says. “I have never seen anything like this in Lafayette.”
But Mood is more than a retail store. It is deeply rooted in service. From weekly floral subscriptions and private design consultations to seasonal and event decorating, every offering is crafted with intention. With Bryce’s background in hospitality installations and Montgomery’s innate eye for balance and storytelling, the duo has naturally expanded their services to include everything from holiday styling to elevated tablescapes and space transformations.
Their ideal client is not defined by age or background, but by curiosity and a love for thoughtful living. “People want to feel something when they walk in,” Bryce says. “We designed Mood with that in mind.”
That vision is reflected in the store’s philosophy. At Mood, your home is a canvas for your senses—a place where design meets personal history and every detail enhances your everyday. The store encourages you to embrace color, mix the unmixable, and transform the mundane into the extraordinary. It is about creating a space that reflects your journey, a sanctuary where every element invites you to Make Your Mood.
“Fragrance, flowers, and color shape how we feel,” Montgomery explains. “We want people to leave our space feeling a little more grounded, a little more inspired, and more at home in themselves.”
Whether you are shopping for a signature candle, a bespoke bouquet, or the perfect gift, Mood by DMJ is more than a store. It is a destination and an escape. A creative collaboration rooted in beauty, emotion, and service, a space where every item tells a story and every detail is intentional.
