Athlete of the Month

Meet Ryan Childress, an all-around athlete and sixth grader at Randall Middle School. Ryan has been swimming for six years, participating in triathlons for five years, and recently began playing water polo. A friend introduced Ryan to the sport two years ago, and he has loved it ever since.

Ryan plays right wing and enjoys how challenging and competitive water polo can be. He has traveled all over Florida, competed in Atlanta, and this past summer competed in Texas for Junior Olympics for water polo. He has also participated in several events for swimming, including the Gator Holiday Classic in Ocala, the  Battle of the Bay, and the Next Level Open Water Championships in Clearwater. For triathlons he always competes in St. Anthony’s Meek and Mighty as well as Palm Harbor Kids Tri for Freedom.

Ryan says water polo is a difficult sport. That is why he was proud to score his first goal and credits his coach, Zak Kappos and his teammates for his success. He also admires and is inspired by his brother Nolan because he is good at swim and waterpolo. Ryan advises others looking to play water polo and swim to build the endurance required for both sports. “In waterpolo-you have to be tough, a good swimmer, and be able to tread water for a very long time. In swim you have to be good at holding your breath.”

Ryan’s parents say that he has learned that the recipe for success is to put in the time and effort and value teamwork. They see the results of what he has learned when he competes through his positive attitude and sportsmanship and how he constantly cheers on others to be their best. When not playing sports, Ryan likes to play video games, skateboard, and hang out with his friends. We wish Ryan all the best in all his future endeavors!
