60 & Thriving: A Heartfelt Journey Through Croatia and Beyond
Gail and her childhood pals celebrated friendship, found healing, and enjoyed adventure.

In late October, my childhood friends and I embarked on an unforgettable adventure through the stunning Croatian seaside towns of Split, Dubrovnik, Togir, and the island of Hvar. The occasion? Our collective 60th birthdays, marked by a journey rich in history, culture, and the boundless beauty of the region.
We, the intrepid quartet, lifelong friends since our school days, decided to celebrate our milestone birthdays with an exploration of the countryside and a venture across the border to Bosnia-Herzegovina. While not many people decide to take a detour to visit this Balkan country, it has a profound history and vibrant culture that is remarkable.
Our first stop was Medjugorje, a small town known for its spiritual significance. It cast a spell on us as we witnessed the sacred site of the holy apparitions by the Virgin Mary. Having recently lost my son, Tomas, I went there with questions for the Holy Mother. As soon as I walked up to her statue and the place of the first apparition, I was overcome with warmth and called to look up to the sun. I was ready to receive her message that Tomas is with her and not to worry. I immediately felt a huge weight off my shoulders and, while sobbing, I was able to smile for the first time since his death. The ethereal atmosphere, coupled with the warmth of the locals, created a deeply moving experience, leaving an indelible mark on all our hearts.
Our journey continued to the town of Mostar, where the iconic, UNESCO World Heritage Site, Stari Most bridge beckoned with its architectural splendor and tales of resilience. Built by the Turks in 1566, it was destroyed in 1993 but rebuilt in 2004. As we strolled through the cobbled streets, we absorbed the charm of this multicultural city, where history is etched into every stone.
On our way back to Split, we stopped for a visit at the Krka National Park, a 109 sq. hectares nature reserve nestled along the Krka River known for its pristine waterfalls. The cascading waters and lush surroundings provided the perfect backdrop for laughter, shared memories, and the joy of reaching a milestone together.
As we celebrated our birthdays amidst the stunning scenery, we found ourselves reflecting on the journey of our own lives— a journey paralleled by the rich history and cultural tapestry of the places we explored. The beauty of Balkan countries, coupled with the deepening of our bonds, created a celebration that transcended time.
In the end, our 60th birthday celebration wasn't just about the years passed; it was about the enduring strength of friendship, the resilience of shared memories, and the joy of discovering new facets of the world and each other. As the sun set over the Adriatic, casting a warm glow on our faces, we toasted to the past, present, and the adventures that still awaited us.
