Meet Max – Red Tail’s Lovable Lion Dog

With a heart and face full of fluff and a vibe set to ‘relax,’ Max proves that being chill is a royal art

The MacLean family—Colin, Sally, Colin II—are proud pet parents to Max, a gentle and lovable Chow Chow who’s been part of their family for the past seven years.
Max’s story began in Tampa, Florida, where Sally first saw his photo and instantly fell in love. It was truly love at first sight, and soon Max was on his way to becoming a beloved member of the family. His name, given by the breeder, stuck—and it suits him perfectly.
Known as the “Lion Dog” in Chinese, the Chow Chow is an ancient breed with a regal history, and Max certainly carries himself like royalty—especially when he’s lounging around the house, a pastime at which he excels. As his family says, “He’s a very good ground dog!” But don't be fooled by his laid-back nature—Max loves outings, especially golf cart rides around Red Tail, strolls through Crocker Park, and the seasonal escape to Naples, Florida, where he enjoys the warmer winter days.
Max is part of the non-sporting breed group, but he thrives on activity in his own dignified way. He enjoys daily walks, sniffing his surroundings, and basking in attention from neighbors. If you spot him around the neighborhood, don’t hesitate to say hello—he’s friendly, loving, and always happy to meet new friends.
Taking care of Max requires some pampering, and his grooming routine is nothing short of elite. He gets professional grooming monthly and a thorough brushing at home every other day to maintain his thick, soft coat. Surprisingly, he sheds very little. Due to his sensitive digestive system—a trait linked to his ancient heritage—Max sticks to a special diet of salmon, rice, hard-boiled eggs, and beef treats. Chicken, unfortunately, is off the menu due to an allergy.
And like many snub-nosed breeds, Max is known to snore—loudly! It’s just one of his many endearing quirks that make him such a special part of the family.
Spoiled? Absolutely. But when you're as charming and sweet-natured as Max, you've more than earned it.
So next time you see Max padding down the street or catching a breeze from his golf cart ride, give him a wave or stop for a scratch behind the ears. He’s always up for making a new friend in Red Tail.
