Charmaine’s Garden of Joy: A Blooming Tribute to Home and Friendship
From landscaper blueprints to a personal paradise, Red Tail’s Charmaine Smith blends creativity, color, and community in her ever-evolving garden sanctuary.

Charmaine Smith, a Red Tail resident, has taken what might seem like just outdoor decor into a full admiration for plant life. In the early stages of her home, her garden layout was designed by a landscaper, but now she takes pride in working with her good friend Krissi to make a variety of color combinations, while also having extra help planting her pots.
Her inspiration to garden around her home started with the belief that having an arrangement of flowers can make a house feel like a home. A beautiful garden gives the space a cozy feel, even on the outside. Happiness overcomes her when she sees new growth every season, while also giving her the chance to learn a few tips and tricks along the way. That being, utilizing the convenience of the individual packets of Miracle-Gro. Not only is it ready to pour, but it doesn’t call for any mixing, so no mess! She’s letting all you aspiring gardeners out there know that it’s at Lowe's… but it’s difficult to find! So get it while you can. She uses a full packet for large pots and half on smaller ones, which means she usually goes through 200+ a season!
Nonetheless, she loves what she does. Her favorite is in late July when her hydrangeas surround her patio, creating a lovely private fence. But, trial and error is also a part of her process. She likes to maintain her color scheme of purple, lime green, yellow, and white when deciding which flowers and plants to grow each season. She chooses her variety based on color and sun preferences, but mainly stays with that same plan, with some slight variation.
As for deciding what plants and flowers to grow, we all know how unpredictable Ohio weather is. So, Charmaine lets Mother Nature decide if watering her plants is necessary each day. She typically does a walk around to see which flowers need to be “Dead Headed,” “Cut,” or replaced!
So, next time you drive down Saint Theresa Boulevard, make sure to stop by to admire Charmaine’s treasured space.
