Empowering Change: Carol Barnes' 3 1/2-Year Commitment to Project Self-Sufficiency

In the Highland Hills neighborhood, a dedicated individual is making a significant impact on the community. Carol Barnes, a long-time resident and one of the first families to move into the neighborhood 28 years ago, has been volunteering with Project Self-Sufficiency of Northern Colorado for the past 3 1/2 years. Her commitment to the organization goes beyond the call of duty as she currently serves as the Board President.

Project Self-Sufficiency of Northern Colorado is a non-profit organization dedicated to assisting low-income, single parents in their journey towards economic independence. Carol's involvement as a Board Member involves critical responsibilities such as Financial Policy, Fundraising, Public Relations, Networking, Strategic Planning, CEO Oversight, and other essential duties. The organization's mission to build and maintain strong, healthy families resonates with Carol, inspiring her to contribute her time and expertise.

If you're wondering how you can join Carol in supporting this noble cause, there are several ways to get involved. Project Self-Sufficiency welcomes donations, whether through recurring contributions, business sponsorships, or even donating your vehicle. Save the date for the annual fundraiser, the Bring the Power Social on March 22 at CSU, from 4-7 PM, where community members can come together to make a difference.

For those seeking a deeper commitment, becoming a Board Member is an option. Project Self-Sufficiency of Northern Colorado seeks dedicated volunteers with business and non-profit connections, along with community resource knowledge. Some responsibilities include:

Participate in collective governance responsibilities.
Attend regular and special Board meetings.
Join at least one Board committee (ad hoc or standing).
Contribute expertise and experience to the organization.
Stay informed about program operation, development, and participant needs.
Act as a liaison with the public, interpreting Project Self-Sufficiency to the community.

Board members play a vital role in governing the organization, and ensuring its mission is carried out effectively.

For those with a passion for hands-on involvement, volunteering is another way to contribute. Project Self-Sufficiency has a specific need for tutors to assist participants with their college coursework. If you're interested in making a direct impact, reach out to volunteer@bringthepower.org.

Carol chose to volunteer with Project Self-Sufficiency because she believes in breaking the cycle of poverty for single parents and their children through education. She states, “I really resonate with the mission to help single parents in their efforts to achieve economic independence through education and become free from community and government assistance. The work that Project Self-Sufficiency does breaks the cycle of poverty not only for single parents but for their children as well. It has a rippling effect for generations to come.” Additionally, she recognizes the impact on the Northern Colorado workforce, helping businesses find skilled employees through education.

Volunteering not only benefits the community but also brings personal rewards. For Carol, being part of Project Self-Sufficiency's board has allowed her to give back and connect with like-minded individuals in the community. She loves living in Northern Colorado and appreciates the opportunity to contribute to making the community even better.

Carol and her family have been an integral part of the neighborhood for nearly three decades. She says, “We appreciate the location, the open feel, and the wonderful neighbors who all look out for one another.” While Carol's husband Kent and two adult daughters, Sierra and Rachel, are not directly involved with the organization, they wholeheartedly support her efforts. Whether it's opening their home for Project Self-Sufficiency events or being there for moral support, the Barnes family embodies the spirit of community.

The photos included with this article capture a memorable fundraiser hosted by Carol and another board member at her home. Titled "Beer vs. Wine – September 2022," the event featured a five-course dining experience. Tickets were sold, and dinners were auctioned off, raising over $7,000 for Project Self-Sufficiency. The success of this event showcases the community's generosity and the power of individuals coming together for a common cause.

Carol Barnes stands as a beacon of community spirit and dedication, making a lasting impact on Northern Colorado through her involvement with Project Self-Sufficiency. As she continues her involvement, she invites others to join the movement, whether through donations, volunteering, or becoming a Board Member, to collectively bring about positive change in the lives of single parents and their families.
