Breakthrough T1D

Turning Type 1 into Type None

A Mission with Heart

November is Diabetes Awareness Month, and we are proud to spotlight Breakthrough T1D, a nonprofit organization with a bold vision: a world without type 1 diabetes (T1D). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 352,000 children and adolescents under age 20 are living with diagnosed diabetes in the United States, the majority of which is type 1. Here in Arkansas, the American Diabetes Association reports that about 307,000 adults ,13.1% of the population, have diabetes, while nearly 70,000 more may be undiagnosed. Through groundbreaking research, advocacy, and community-driven programs, Breakthrough T1D is making life better for individuals and families affected by T1D while pushing toward the ultimate goal of a cure.

Michelle’s Why

For Michelle Summers, Director of Breakthrough T1D Arkansas, this mission is personal. When her son was diagnosed with T1D just after his first birthday, Michelle stepped into a world of constant monitoring, insulin calculations, and sleepless nights. “He is my reason,” she shares. “I want to find a cure for him and all of the kids living with this relentless and terrible disease.”

Her journey reflects what so many families face: the challenges of navigating an unpredictable illness that demands attention 24/7. While technology has made management easier, families still endure daily struggles, guessing how much a toddler might eat, carefully counting carbohydrates, or waking multiple times at night to check blood sugar levels.

Support for Every Stage

Breakthrough T1D helps lighten that burden by offering critical support programs. From Bags of Hope for newly diagnosed families to Caregiver Coffees, Family Picnics, Teen Bowling Nights, Ballpark Outings, and Adult Meet & Greets, the Arkansas chapter provides encouragement, education, and connection. Advocacy initiatives like Children’s Congress and local policy work give families a voice, while major fundraising events fuel life-saving research.

Spotlight on the Gala

One of the most powerful ways the community comes together is through the annual gala. On Saturday, April 25, 2026, supporters will gather at the beautiful Heroncrest Event Center in Elm Springs for the NWA “Party with a Purpose” Gala, a night that blends fun, philanthropy, and heartfelt impact. Guests will enjoy a lively cocktail hour with live jazz, a gourmet dinner, exciting live and silent auctions, the inspiring Fund A Cure paddle raise, and an after-party with music and dancing.

This year’s gala also celebrates the dedication of community leaders, including Honorary Corporate Chair Amanda Jenkins (Walmart), Gala Chair Ashlee Pratt (Dexcom), Gala Honoree Dr. Rachel Kilpatrick (Washington Regional), and Fund A Cure Chairs Scott & Andrea Tharnish (ArcBest and Bristol Myers Squibb).

Why It Matters

Every dollar raised at the gala goes directly to advancing research and supporting families living with T1D. For Michelle, the most rewarding part is seeing the difference firsthand, watching newly diagnosed families find hope, kids discover community, and adults feel empowered. “It’s not just about funding research,” she says. “It’s about bringing encouragement, strength, and connection to people who live with type 1 every single day.”
