Finding Confidence on Stage
The Young Actors Guild
A Creative Opportunity for Kids This Summer
As families across Northwest Arkansas begin planning for summer camps, activities, and ways to keep kids engaged, one opportunity stands out for those with a creative spark. For children who love storytelling, music, or simply stepping outside of their comfort zone, the arts can offer something truly transformative.
That’s where The Young Actors Guild comes in.
A Legacy of Impact Through the Arts
The Young Actors Guild is a nonprofit youth theatre based in Van Buren, Arkansas, with a remarkable legacy of serving youth and families for over 50 years.
While the organization is known for its high-quality productions, including seven shows each year and recognition with 22 National Youth Arts Awards, the true impact goes far beyond the stage.
At its heart, Young Actors Guild is about helping children grow, both as performers and as individuals.
Building Confidence and Community
Walk into a rehearsal, and you might see a shy child quietly finding their place. By the time closing night arrives, that same child is often standing taller, speaking with confidence, and embracing a new sense of self.
Through theatre, students are encouraged to take risks, express themselves, and discover abilities they may not have known they had. The experience builds more than performance skills. It builds resilience, creativity, and confidence that carries into every area of life.
For many participants, Young Actors Guild becomes more than just an activity. It becomes a second home where friendships are formed and a sense of belonging grows.
Accessible, Meaningful, and Impactful
One of the most powerful aspects of The Young Actors Guild is its commitment to accessibility.
The organization strives to keep productions free for participants, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent children from experiencing the arts.
For some students, this opportunity goes even deeper. Participation in a YAG production can provide meaningful arts training for children who may not otherwise have access to private music or theatre instruction, helping bridge an important gap and opening doors that might not have been possible otherwise.
Their outreach program also brings performances directly into the community, touring to more than 15 organizations each year and offering free shows to audiences who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend.
The impact of this work can be seen not only in the confidence built on stage, but in the lives of its alumni. Some have gone on to successful careers in the entertainment industry, including Hunter Doohan, known for his role as Tyler in the Netflix series Wednesday, as well as Broadway performers Chad Burris and Zachary Myers. Others have carried the skills they developed into careers in education, business, and communities across the country.
With upcoming productions like A Wrinkle in Time and the summer musical Come From Away, there are exciting opportunities for local youth to get involved, grow, and shine.
