American Spirit
Sailing takes me away: Artist Barbara Lee captures an American summer so sweetly
In seeking patriotic art and photos, we were inundated—in the best way. Contributing photographers Bob Warner, Ken Grille, and Bob Lille sent along a bevy of fireworks and flags, while watercolorist and art instructor Debra Birtwell presented beautiful pieces of her own, as well as her talented students, to celebrate this most memorable season in our country’s 250 years.
From Barbara Lee’s whimsical work to Joan Sweeney’s preference for beach scenes and landscapes, Debra takes pride in both artists—either have attended her classes six years, and counting. Deemed a “happy creature,” according to Debra, Barbara “does not stay within the lines,” while Joan, who was originally inspired by her uncle Bourke Sweeney, a commercial artist for Nabisco, is very active in various local art organizations and dedicated to learning. She says, “It’s never too late to learn a new skill or hobby!”
Barbara and Joan’s patriotic watercolors united perfectly with our photographers’ scenes of Americana. From seaside celebrations to apple pie, not only do these images bring joy, they tell simple stories of time and place, and bridge the gap between past and present. Art in any medium is both universal and timeless as it weaves different heritages, cultures and traditions together. United we stand, indeed.
