When Louis Zaino arrived in America from Italy at just 15 years old, he carried little more than determination and a willingness to work hard. He worked during the day and attended school at night to learn English, all while laying the groundwork for what would become a multi-generational business built from the ground up, quite literally.

One of his first jobs was at the long-established and beloved Hicks Nurseries. By coincidence (or perhaps destiny?), his first day on the job marked the company’s 100th anniversary. Amazed by this incredible milestone, Louis was inspired to create a business that would endure through time and bring natural beauty to people’s homes. What began as a challenging transition into a new country slowly took root as a lifelong passion.

Decades of hard work and dedication followed. After launching a business with his brother Larry, Louis honed his craft in plants, landscaping, and design, earning a reputation for integrity, expertise, and hands-on skill. Along the way, he built not only a reputable business but a life in Old Westbury - eventually settling here with his family and building their home on Terrace Court.

Eventually, alongside his sons Anthony and Michael, he fulfilled a dream: opening Zaino’s Nursery. More than a business, it has become a destination for gardening essentials, gorgeous plant materials, and family-friendly holiday events.

Today, Louis enjoys a well-earned retirement, while his son Anthony leads the nursery with the same devotion his father instilled, and his son Michael runs his highly-regarded landscaping business with equal care and commitment, thoughtfully keeping the name Louis Zaino, Inc. Anthony’s own sons, Tony and Andrew, have also embraced the trade and are prepared to carry the family tradition into the next generation.
