The newest Texas State Park in 25 years is bringing HillCountry Charm Just an Hour from Fort Worth

Tucker Lake

Texas is getting ready to welcome a breathtaking new escape into its family of state parks—Palo Pinto Mountains State Park, located just 75 miles west of Dallas-Fort Worth. Set to open in summer 2025, this 4,871-acre expanse of rolling hills, scenic trails, and peaceful waters is expected to become a go-to destination for nature lovers across North Texas. "It’s like a piece of Hill Country that’s an hour from Fort Worth,” says Park Superintendent James Adams.
From the moment you enter, Palo Pinto Mountains State Park offers something for every kind of adventurer. Visitors can explore miles of multiuse trails designed for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding—many leading to remote scenic vistas where the noise of the world fades away. At the heart of the park lies Tucker Lake, where guests can fish, paddle, swim, and birdwatch. The lake will remain free of motorboats, preserving the quiet tranquility that makes the park feel like a true getaway.
Camping enthusiasts will find more than 60 types of campsites, from primitive tent areas to 25 RV pads with additional parking. Picnic areas, group pavilions, and playgrounds make the park perfect for families.
The park's development began in 2011 with help from the Texas Nature Conservancy and the City of Strawn. When it opens in 2025, it will be the first new state park in North Texas in nearly 25 years. With 85 state parks and 9.3 million visitors in 2023, Palo Pinto Mountains arrives at a time when Texans are craving outdoor spaces more than ever. The park is expected to welcome up to 100,000 visitors annually.
Whether you're hiking, camping, or just soaking up the views, Palo Pinto Mountains State Park is poised to become a beloved local gem. For more information go to https://tpwd.texas.gov/state-parks/palo-pinto-mountains
