Connected at Ciao

Neighbors and friends gathered for a warm, buffet-style evening at Ciao Amici’s, enjoying incredible food provided by Nick, meaningful connections, and an inspiring story that set the tone for what’s to come.

It was a beautiful evening bringing neighbors and friends together for our very first STROLL Oak Pointe gathering with Jim and me as your new publishers… and what a way to begin.

Hosted at Ciao Amici’s, the evening took place in their private space below the restaurant—an inviting setting that many neighbors shared they didn’t even know existed. It created the perfect atmosphere for a relaxed, buffet-style experience where everyone could move about, connect naturally, and enjoy the night at their own pace.

A heartfelt thank you to Nick, the owner, for going above and beyond. The entire spread was generously provided compliments of him, and it truly showed. From the thoughtful preparation to the attentive service throughout the evening, we are so grateful for the way he and his team hosted and took care of our group.

The food itself had everyone talking. A fresh veggie tray paired with a ranch that quickly became a favorite, caprese skewers with tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil, and warm bruschetta-style baguettes layered with tomato and melted mozzarella set the tone.

Guests also enjoyed an array of cheeses and crackers, and meatballs that, according to one neighbor, were “to die for” and easily the standout of the evening. The mostaccioli surprised many, with one neighbor sharing that while it’s often overlooked, this version completely changed her perspective and “set the standard.” And just when everyone thought they had tried it all, chicken parmesan made its way around, rounding out a spread that reminded both new and returning guests just how consistently delicious this local favorite continues to be.
Beyond the food, the heart of the evening was connection.

It was such a joy for us to meet so many neighbors for the first time, reconnect with familiar faces, and begin building relationships in a setting that felt easy and genuine. For some, it was their first visit to Ciao Amici’s. For others, it had simply been a while. Either way, it was a wonderful reminder of the experiences waiting right here in our own community.

A special moment of the evening came when Jeff Lazeros shared a few words with the group. He spoke about the launch of Strikeout Baseball in East Lansing—a vision 25 years in the making—and the room was deeply moved.

What stood out most was his perseverance. Even after losing his life savings the first time, he didn’t stop. Today, that same vision has come to life, now backed by John Smoltz and an incredible board of directors. It was a powerful reminder of what can happen when someone stays committed to something bigger than themselves.

We had the opportunity to share his full story in the April edition of STROLL Oak Pointe… and it’s one worth reading and passing along.

The evening wrapped with a few lucky neighbors taking home door prizes and plenty of positive feedback from those who attended. More than anything, it reinforced what these gatherings are all about… creating space to connect, to share experiences, and to build something meaningful together here in Oak Pointe.

And if this first gathering was any indication… we’re just getting started.
