Summer’s Here—Let’s Make It Memorable (Minus the Turtle Soup)
My Billie (formerly Coco) adopted from the SPCA of East Texas
When you think of the Fourth of July, chances are you're picturing a grill full of burgers, coolers packed with frosty drinks, and a fireworks show that ends the night with a bang. That’s how most of us celebrate these days — loud, laid-back and surrounded by people who matter.
But peel back the layers of history, and you’ll find a different kind of feast. Historians say John and Abigail Adams marked the very first Independence Day with turtle soup, poached salmon and green peas. No hot dogs. No potato salad. Just a big, strange, celebratory meal. It’s a reminder that even our most familiar traditions had to start somewhere — and that every July, we get a chance to write our own.
July still hits with that same energy: high summer, high heat and the kind of freedom that comes with stepping outside the routine. Whether traveling, firing up the grill or simply pausing to take a deep breath, it’s a moment to reset and recharge.
Inside this issue, you’ll find stories that reflect that spirit—introducing a brand-new neighbor with a Masters-worthy arrival, celebrating three generations of love in the Spradlin family, and spotlighting community heroes from rescue pups to fitness pros. From preschool adventures to restoration makeovers, every page reminds us how vibrant Oak Creek life really is.
We’re grateful to our partners for helping us bring Stroll Oak Creek to life and to you, our readers, for showing up month after month with curiosity, passion and perspective.
Enjoy the summer. Build something worth remembering. And maybe skip the turtle soup.
Until Next Month,
