It was born out of nationwide shock over the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill and a desire to raise awareness about the environmental issues of the time. What started as a passionate protest grew into a global movement so impactful that it led to the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the passage of pivotal laws like the Clean Air Act. As Earth Day has evolved, it has inspired millions worldwide to take meaningful actions to protect our environment. Maybe you’ll choose to reduce your waste with reusable bags and containers, start composting, or plant a tree or garden to help create a greener world.
