The Red Hook

List of Ingredients:
2 Ounces Straight Rye Whiskey (recommend Knob Creek Rye, Rare Breed Rye or other expressions that are bottled around 100 proof)
1/2 ounce Sweet Vermouth
1/2 ounce  Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur
Garnish with an Orange Wheel or Maraschino Cherry

Mixing Instructions if applicable:
Everyone is so busy both in the kitchen and at the bar during the holiday season, so we're keeping this simple:
Combine all three ingredients over ice and stir like you're a busy elf trying to meet a toy deadline. Strain it all into a chilled cocktail glass and serve straight up.

Any special instructions?
For those who are very particular about their vermouth, I suggest seeking out and using Punt e Mes. For everyone else, any nice, full-bodied sweet vermouth will do nicely.

This drink can also look stunning with no garnish when it is lined up accompanying a big dinner set up. I learned a long time ago that sometimes it is best to leave the fruit on the counter and out of the glass.

What inspired you to make this cocktail or any history about the drink that you would like to share?
We're taking the beloved Manhattan cocktail and relocating it all in one borough over to Brooklyn's Red Hook neighborhood. (Coincidentally, also the home of the Widow Jane Distillery.)

The classic Manhattan has been a fixture on cocktail menus since the late 1800s and scores of variations have popped up over the last hundred-plus years. Many a bartender has taken his turn with a modern twist on an undeniable classic. The Red Hook emerged about twenty years ago out of the (you guessed it) New York City bar "Milk & Honey."

I love a cocktail that delivers the best of both worlds - bitter and sweet. With a nice rye base, the vermouth gives us a nice bite while the maraschino liqueur delivers a strong, sweet finish.

This one is wonderful from start to finish. And that roguish red hue means it automatically pairs well with any holiday party décor. Cheers!
