It's Fuzzy Wuzzy

The Furry Eight Legged Arachnid Spinning Her Web of Companionship

How did you come to own a pet spider, and what inspired you to choose this particular species?

Davis and Britton have had a love for insects and little critters since their toddler years. When a Texas brown tarantula crawled on my tennis racquet at the courts, we knew we had to foster it for the girls.

What is your spider’s name, and does it have any unique characteristics or behaviors that make it special?

Fuzzy Wuzzy has lots of fur all over her exoskeleton. When she’s nervous, she scratches her hair off. She molts and sheds her exoskeleton every 4-6 months as she grows bigger.

Can you tell us about your spider’s habitat and living environment? How do you ensure its comfort and well-being?

Fuzzy Wuzzy likes to crawl, scale, and burrow under wood bark and coco fiber substrate. We let her explore the house with the girls; her favorite hiding spots are under cabinets and princess dresses.

What kind of care and maintenance does your spider require on a daily basis? Are there any specific dietary needs or environmental conditions to consider?

Although Fuzzy Wuzzy eats once a week, she can go up to one month without food as long as she has water (she is our lowest-maintenance pet). Her favorite foods are crickets and mealworms.

Have you encountered any challenges or surprises while caring for your spider? How have you overcome them?

The first time Fuzzy phased through a molt, she wouldn’t eat for weeks and was very sensitive. We were worried she wasn’t going to make it, but a few days later, we found her molting and fuzzy 2.0.

Lastly, what do you enjoy most about having a pet spider, and what would you want others to know about these fascinating creatures?

Female tarantulas are extremely resilient and can live 30+ years. Fuzzy will still be around into our empty nesting years.
