A Century of Care: The Davis Monuments Legacy
Few businesses can say they’ve been family-owned and operated for over a century, but Davis Monuments, Inc. has been a cornerstone in our region since 1913. Founded by George W. Davis, the company has been passed down through five generations, each committed to craftsmanship, compassion, and carrying on the family tradition. Today, Zane Ermine is preparing to take over from his father, Thomas “Ralph” Ermine, making him the fifth generation to lead this remarkable legacy.
Davis Monuments specializes in headstones, monument repair, final date engraving, stone cleanings, and resets. They also offer bronze work, cemetery accessories, cremation urns, ceramic photos, and even pet memorials. Beyond cemeteries, their work can be seen in granite signs, war memorials, and landscape rocks throughout the area. What makes them stand out is not only their expertise, but the fact that all design, sandblasting, installation, and engraving are done in-house—a rarity in today’s industry.
For Zane, this work is deeply personal. Having grown up in the business, he recalls spending his childhood in cemeteries, helping his grandmother with office tasks and learning design software from his dad. After pursuing a Bachelor’s in Anthropology at Pitt-Greensburg and a Master’s in Applied Archaeology at IUP, Zane returned home with his wife, Kelsey, and their son, Ezra, to continue the family tradition. “Selling headstones is actually an awesome job,” Zane shares. “We get to hear so many stories from families, and it feels good to help bring closure to their loved ones’ lives.”
The company now operates from their main office in Scottdale, with additional locations in Connellsville and Smithfield, plus displays in funeral homes and cemeteries across Fayette and Westmoreland Counties. With 12 employees and 10 commission-based salespeople, they remain one of the few monument companies in the region still fully family-owned for over 100 years. And yes—they even have a beloved shop dog!
Zane and Kelsey, married on Halloween in 2018, now work side by side to carry on the Davis Monuments legacy. Kelsey, a former social studies teacher, manages the office and social media while Ezra brings joy to their days. “We thought that working with Stroll Murrysville would be a great way to expand our footprint and showcase our business to areas that wouldn’t normally see it,” Zane explains.
