Michael Hessenauer and his wife Anita met in Bowling Green, Ohio where both were graduate students at the University. The couple lived in Europe for several years, and then settled in Central Ohio, making Muirfield Village their home. Michael earned an MBA from The Ohio State University while Anita has a PhD in French from the University of Strasbourg, France and taught at The Ohio State University.

Hessenauer started his career as a commercial real estate appraiser. He was then named Director of Acquisitions for U.S. Realty Consultants, based in Columbus. A few years later, he formed his eponymous company.

Initially, The Hessenauer Corporation focused primarily on multifamily, commercial and industrial properties. However in recent years, the company has diversified into residential sales and has experienced increased growth in this area.
