Mount Airy

I took a trip up to Mt Airy, NC, which is just up I-77 near the Virginia state line. It is home to the Andy Griffith Museum and the Siamese Twins Museum. Both are located downtown, and passes to either, or both, are available for purchase. The Andy Griffith Museum has been updated, and the Siamese Twins Museum is new. Both were fascinating and a great idea for a day trip.

Mount Airy is the inspiration for the fictional town of Mayberry, where the TV show "The Andy Griffith Show" is set.  This museum is dedicated to honoring the legacy of actor Andy Griffith. It features exhibits on the show's history and its characters. It also honors the rest of Griffith's career, including his early and later years and contributions to American entertainment. Businesses in Mount Airy embrace the heritage of The Andy Griffith Show.

Nearby, the Siamese Twins Museum honors the history and legacy of the famous Siamese twins, Chang and Eng Bunker. Born in 1811 in Siam (modern-day Thailand), the conjoined twins lived remarkable lives, becoming popular performers and cultural icons in the 19th century. The museum features a variety of exhibits that provide insights into their lives, including their early history, circus performances, and their eventual settlement in Mount Airy, where they became local landowners and led families of their own.

Mount Airy is about an hour and a half away and has a charming downtown. The museums were fascinating, with many interactive exhibits. I highly recommend it for a fun afternoon!
