Celebrating a Decade of Stories in Montebello

This month marks a truly special milestone - ten years of sharing the stories, smiles, and spirit of Montebello through the pages of our community magazine. What began as Beautiful Mountain Living in September 2015 was more than just a publication—it was an invitation for neighbors to open their doors and their hearts, letting others glimpse the moments, memories, and milestones that make life here so special.
Since that very first issue landed in mailboxes, our pages have featured more than 600 stories - written by Montebello neighbors, about Montebello neighbors - each one a thread in the beautiful tapestry of our community. From heartfelt family profiles to celebrations of hobbies, milestones, and traditions, the magazine has become a living scrapbook of life on this monte bello (“beautiful mountain”).
In July 2022, our beloved publication embraced a fresh new chapter, rebranding as Stroll Montebello. With a new name came new energy, and as our neighborhood has continued to grow, so too has our magazine’s role as a connector, a storyteller, and a keepsake that residents look forward to each month.
Looking back, the covers alone tell their own story—season after season, year after year, capturing the joy, beauty, and personality of the families who make Montebello what it is. Inside, the words have done something even more powerful: they’ve built bonds. Whether you’ve lived here for decades or just a few months, flipping through these pages has offered a chance to meet neighbors you might not have crossed paths with yet, to learn their stories, and maybe even discover a shared interest or two.
As we celebrate this anniversary, we’ve gathered a selection of past covers alongside heartfelt reflections from some of the residents who have been featured over the years. They share what it was like to tell their story, what they cherish most about Montebello, and how the magazine has helped make our community feel even closer.
It has been an absolute honor to help tell the story of Montebello for the past decade. Here’s to the families who have opened their doors, the neighbors who have read and celebrated their stories, and the many more memories we’ll capture in the years ahead.
February, 2016 - Joyce and Glenn Bridges
“As residents of Montebello since 2005, we love this community, living for 14 years on Sorono Dr. in Villiaggio, and then downsizing to our condo in Palazzo 6 years ago. We have seen so much growth over the years and love hearing about new residents and activities through The Stroll. Our cover all those years ago prompted many conversations about travel, France, and especially Normandy and the American lives sacrificed there for freedom.”
April, 2016 - Rebecca Lanford
“My favorite part of being featured in the magazine was to hopefully bring awareness of the importance of being an organ donor. When I got the call from the Emory Transplant Team that I had a match for a kidney, it was Halloween night at 5:56 pm. Halloween night is probably the busiest night in Montebello and the doorbell was ringing with Trick or Treaters. Several neighbors came in and waited with me to get that “second call” verifying it was a go. My family was here, neighbors and friends…who else gets that kind of support on a life saving call?
Since that night and years have passed, unfortunately I experienced the other side of organ donation with the terrific loss of our friend’s son. I remember Grant’s father saying they did not get the miracle for which they were praying. I told Jeff that although they did not get the miracle they were praying for, they gave several others the miracle of life by donating Grant’s organs. And it truly is a miracle. When my donor’s family came from Oklahoma to meet me, as they were leaving, I told them every October 31st, I will mourn for their loss, but I will rejoice for this wonderful second chance of life.”
May, 2016 - Judy Madaus
“10 years? Doesn’t seem possible does it? I love how this magazine has grown and I love ‘meeting’ new neighbors and having neighbors get to know Mike and me through the magazine. A lot has changed in our lives, but we cherish the memories and the opportunity to share them!”
July, 2016 - Terri Shaluly
What was your favorite part of being featured in the magazine?
Being featured in the July 2016 Stroll Montebello (Beautiful Mountain Living) was very special as I wanted to surprise my husband, VP, as he was celebrating a milestone anniversary for his time in Greenville since he moved from Finland to further his career as VP of Finance/IT with a Finnish manufacturing company.
He so enjoyed our home here in Villaggio and always had a smile and wave for everyone! VP & I were delighted to meet Allison Masquelier and I have enjoyed her friendship since.
What is something that you've enjoyed about the magazine through the years?
Allison Masquelier, Area Director & Publisher of Stroll Montebello is very genuine & enthusiastic about the publication. Her professionalism & diligence is well respected & appreciated as she and her resident talented team deliver interesting stories, photos, recipes, health issues, events, etc., that bind the community. I also appreciate the advertising partners who are an integral part of each issue. I feel that the represented companies are a trusted source and will no doubt provide professional and friendly services. Thank you Allison & team for all that you do! Congratulations on 10 years!
What has changed in your life since you were featured on the cover?
With profound sadness, my husband VP, suddenly passed away in March of 2019. I deeply grieve his loss but I feel fortunate to be safe & secure in my home in Villaggio for the past 19 years. Many neighbors are so kind, caring and supportive. I continue to enjoy creating floral porch/patioscapes and I am comfortably adjusting to retirement.

What was your favorite part of being featured in the magazine?
We were featured in the magazine right after we moved to Montebello. We moved from Half Mile Lake where we had established a great community, so it was sweet to feel welcomed right away by being featured in the magazine. We were eager to meet new friends and to find a new community of neighbors.
What is something that you've enjoyed about the magazine through the years?
I love getting to know all the fascinating people who live in Montebello, and the magazine provides us a great opportunity to learn interesting things about each other and to keep up with the social opportunities in the community.
What has changed in your life since you were featured on the cover?
The kids have grown up a lot since Lori Madeline took this sweet picture of us in 2017! Leah is in her 4th year at Furman, Daniel is in his 3rd year at Anderson University, and Jenna is starting 11th grade. Dan and I are loving this phase of parenting 3 awesome young adults!
April, 2018 - Lori Madeline
What was your favorite part of being featured in the magazine?
I really enjoyed being able to contribute to my community. There was an added bonus of being able to meet and form friendships with the people I photographed. Each family and person I photographed was unique and special and I enjoyed learning about them and showcasing their stories through my lens. Oh and being able to work with and form a special friendship with the editor, Allison Masquelier! She’s an absolute doll!
What is something that you've enjoyed about the magazine through the years?
I always look forward to reading Stroll Montebello because it is fun to see what everyone is doing! We have such a diversely talented group of people here and it’s inspiring reading about them all. As a pet lover, I also love reading about all the fur babies. The magazine helps us stay connected as a community and fosters a sense of togetherness.
What has changed in your life since you were featured on the cover?
A lot has changed since I was last featured on the cover. I am no longer doing custom portrait sessions and my photography has transitioned from that to creating photographic fine art. It is such a joy to create a framed art piece for my home or a friend’s or family member's. I will offer my work to the public with a new website launching soon. Another huge change is that my husband Lee and I have purchased 18 acres of land about 20 minutes away and will be building a new home in the next few years. It’s something we have always romanticized about and are now finally doing. Our hearts will always be in Montebello and we’ve loved every minute of living here!

My studio is now located on Old Bumcombe Road since my new house is somewhat smaller than the last one. Hmmm . . . it might be time to move again!”

July, 2024 - Echoes of Emma, The Calder Family
“What a milestone! I guess something we as a family would love for more people in the neighborhood to know is that the non-profit we started after we lost Emma is about to celebrate 5 years. The sad aspect of that is on September 15th, it will be five years since her accident when we lost her right outside the neighborhood. We miss her every day, but we're so glad we can remember her this way.” (echoesofemma.com)
