Meet Birdie: The Goofy and Beloved Four-Legged Family Member

Discover Birdie's Adventures, From Bug-Hunting to Toddler-Taming

How did Birdie join your family? When I was about 6 months pregnant we lost our 8-year-old lab to her battle with cancer. Many people probably saw our previous dog's journey through cancer with her leg amputation and eventually carting her around the neighborhood. When she passed away I was so sad and the house felt incredibly empty. I couldn’t imagine not having a dog for long, even though people told me I was crazy to get a puppy right before we had our first baby, we decided to get Birdie. We got Birdie about 2 months before our baby boy came and it’s been a challenging but amazing journey.

Is there a story behind your Birdie's name? My husband decided to name her Birdie while we were golfing on our babymoon saying no matter what he’d always have a birdie!

Does Birdie have special talents or quirks? Birdie is the most goofy dog. She loves pouncing on bugs and chasing them around the yard. She’s had 3 allergic reactions due to chasing and eating bees and unknown objects, one landing her in the ER. She also always has to have two objects in her mouth at all times whether it’s two balls, a ball and a stick, a stick and a leaf, etc. In her short year of life, she’s provided us with so many laughs with her goofy personality.

What is Birdie's favorite toy or thing to do? She loves her tennis balls. She tends to roll them under the couch and continually ask us to retrieve them for her. She would live outside chasing balls if she could.

How spoiled is Birdie? The most spoiled. She has slept with us since we got her, even though we were highly encouraged not to.

What do you enjoy most about Birdie? She is the BEST big sister to our son Tucker. She loves being wherever he is and even went through a destruction phase once he started going to daycare. She’s thoroughly enjoyed him starting solids and stepping up as the official clean-up crew.

Anything else you'd like to share about Birdie? Birdie is an introvert. She loves people and dogs but gets scared and overwhelmed at daycare with all the dogs. She prefers smaller groups of dogs to play with and needs a minute before she applies millions of kisses to people. If anyone is on Monticello and has a puppy that loves to play we’d love to meet up for a puppy play date!
