From Africa to Newport Beach: A Journey of Discovery, Gratitude, and Homecoming

My September adventure to Africa, accompanied by my fiancée, Julie, was an unparalleled experience that left an indelible mark on our hearts and souls. Visiting five diverse countries – Qatar, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Botswana – marked my sixth continent explored, and I can confidently say that this journey was unlike any other.

Africa's spiritual aura was palpable everywhere we ventured. The hundreds of miles we traveled across the African landscape seemed like a pilgrimage of self-discovery and enlightenment.

Each country we visited had its unique charms. In Qatar, the futuristic skyline of Doha, with its stunning architecture and bustling markets, left us in awe. The vibrant beauty of South Africa's Cape Town, Zimbabwe's majestic Victoria Falls, Zambia's wildlife-rich national parks, and Botswana's pristine Okavango Delta provided unforgettable experiences that connected us to the wild heart of Africa.

What truly made this trip extraordinary were the people we met along the way. Their warmth, hospitality, and rich traditions opened our eyes to the depth of human connection transcending geographical boundaries. The diverse cultures we encountered enriched our understanding of the world in ways we couldn't have imagined.

Of course, Africa's wild beauty was a major highlight. Witnessing majestic animals roam freely in their natural habitat was awe-inspiring.

As we reflect on this adventure, we're overwhelmed with gratitude for the memories made, the lessons learned, and the incredible experiences. The landscapes, people, and wildlife of Africa will forever hold a place in our hearts, and we can't wait to return to this magnificent continent one day.

As with my previous overseas adventures, I find myself having an even greater appreciation and gratitude for Newport Beach upon returning home.

I’m delighted to see progress on several projects that will add to the vibrancy of our city, such as the newly open Palmilla Cocina y Tequila on the Peninsula (in the former spot of Rudy’s Bar and Grill), the major renovation and remodeling of the luxury hotel Pendry at Fashion Island, and the coming expansion of the Lido House Hotel.

I’ve found that as travel enriches my perspective by exposing me to diverse cultures, landscapes, and ways of life, it also ignites a deep appreciation for the unique qualities of my hometown. As your City Council representative, I remain committed to preserving Newport Beach’s charm, while addressing its challenges, to ensure this remains a place worth cherishing for generations to come.
