Meet Matthew Schmidt: Small Moments, Big Impact
Hello, my name is Matthew Schmidt, and I am a junior at St. X High School. A couple of months ago, my counselor pulled me into his office and asked if I wanted to help out a girl named Bailey, who works for Saint X. She has a couple of jobs around the school, including helping our librarian, organizing merchandise, and assisting our counselors. My counselor approached me because Bailey needed help with cognitive skills. She needed help with this because she is a member of The Down Syndrome of Louisville.
A few times a week in my study hall, Bailey will come into the counseling department, where I also work. One day, I helped her learn how to maintain eye contact throughout a conversation. This was a big issue when I first met her. Now every time I see her, she looks me right in the eyes. On another day, we guided her through different social situations; while doing so, I taught her how to show her respect to whoever was talking. This includes me asking her questions like, "How would you show someone that you are interested in what they are saying?” I had to show her how to sit up straight and show her interest. On another day, we showed her how to use scissors, which was a pretty fun activity.
Working with Bailey has taught me many valuable lessons, including how to help someone with Down Syndrome. People with Down Syndrome may struggle in certain areas, but they can learn how to succeed if someone teaches them. I have had a great time helping Bailey over the last couple of months, and we have even developed a strong friendship. I am super grateful to have her in my life, and she has a wonderful impact on me.
