The Casconi Family’s Italian Adventure

For the Casconi family, this summer was one to remember. John, Ashley, and their kids Cam (9) and Jenna (7) spent nearly two weeks exploring the beauty, history, and flavor of Italy. From the southern coasts of Sicily to the winding canals of Venice, every stop brought a new adventure—and a few surprises along the way.
“We were away for 13 days, and it still didn’t feel like enough,” they told us. “Having to come back was definitely the only disappointing part.”
The trip was deeply meaningful. Ashley had always dreamed of showing John Rome, and John’s grandparents were originally from Sicily. Walking through his family’s hometown in the province of Ragusa added a special layer of connection. “Visiting Sicily felt like stepping back into our roots,” John shared.
The Casconis made the most of their time abroad. In Sicily, they swam in the Ionian Sea, relaxed on the beaches, explored World War II bunkers, and even trekked up Mt. Etna, Europe’s tallest and most active volcano. The kids were in awe of the lava fields and volcanic landscape. To top it off, they ended up with quite the celebrity neighbor. “Our villa was next to Whoopi Goldberg’s,” John laughed. “We actually got to hang out with her and her family—it was completely unexpected!”
From there, the family ventured north. In Rome, they took a highly recommended golf cart historical tour, zooming from one iconic site to the next. Stops included the Colosseum, the Spanish Steps, St. Peter’s Basilica, and Circus Maximus, where the kids couldn’t resist reenacting ancient chariot races. Their hotel was just a block from the Trevi Fountain, so tossing coins into the famous landmark became a daily ritual. “Rome was definitely our favorite city,” the whole family agreed.
Of course, no Italian trip would be complete without indulging in its cuisine. “Gelato, pizza, pasta, espresso, and more gelato,” John shared. One culinary highlight came in Venice, where they dined at George Clooney’s favorite restaurant. Venice also brought a private Riva boat ride through the canals, a walking tour of its charming streets, and even a brush with the paparazzi during the Venice Film Festival. “We spotted George Clooney, Emma Stone, Julia Roberts, and even Cam’s favorite actor, Adam Sandler, who was staying at our hotel,” John said. The family also took a private tour of the famous Murano Glass Factory, marveling at the craftsmanship.
At Lake Garda, they enjoyed a relaxing boat ride surrounded by breathtaking views, adding yet another unforgettable memory to their travels.
So what advice would the Casconis give to other families planning a trip to Italy? “Splurge on the private tours,” the family suggested. “They help you skip the lines and having your own guide means you can stop for gelato whenever you want. And make sure to carve out at least one chill day so your body can rest.”
It was a whirlwind adventure, full of history, food, laughter, and a few star-studded surprises. But more than anything, it was a chance for the Casconi family to create memories together. “Yes, we would absolutely go back,” John said. “In fact, the kids are already asking when.”
