Meet Harold!
Lake Forest’s Tennis Ball-Loving, Squirrel-Chasing Standard Poodle

If you’ve spotted a regal-looking Standard Poodle darting across a yard in hot pursuit of a squirrel or trotting down the street with a tennis ball in his mouth, you’ve likely met Harold—a beloved Lake Forest resident and the four-legged member of the Ramser family.
Harold is seven years old and full of personality. His journey to the neighborhood began on Facebook, where his owners connected with a breeder specifically because they were looking for a dog that was allergy-friendly. “We knew we wanted to start a family one day,” they shared, “and it was really important to us to have a dog that wouldn’t trigger allergies for our future children. We read too many stories of families having to re-home their pets for that reason. Harold was always meant to be family.”
And family he is. Described affectionately as “just like a child,” Harold is known for his endless energy, silly nature, and loyalty. Wherever Harold goes, you can bet a tennis ball isn’t far behind. “He’s obsessed with tennis balls. And squirrels. So many squirrels,” his family laughs. “He’s constantly on alert in the yard—he’s never caught one, thankfully, but it’s definitely not for lack of trying!”
Though he’s always ready to play, Harold has a sweet, cuddly side too—especially when there’s a storm brewing. During loud weather, he becomes a shadow to his mom and dad, not wanting to leave their sides. He also has a charming way of communicating: when he wants something, he’ll quietly rest his head on your lap until you figure it out.
Harold’s manners are just as impressive as his energy. “He’s never chewed on furniture or shoes,” his owners note proudly. “Only his toys.” He’s also quite the smart pup, understanding a long list of words and commands including “ball,” “park,” “treat,” “go for a ride,” “go outside,” and “go get it.” He can shake, stay, speak, and more—though his most “impressive” trick might be slipping out of the yard for a neighborhood squirrel chase when he’s feeling particularly mischievous.
When it comes to treats, Harold is all about the protein. Freeze-dried chicken or anything meaty gets his full attention. After all, this poodle is a proud carnivore.
Whether he’s making the rounds for his next squirrel hunt or curling up during a thunderstorm, Harold brings joy and laughter to his family every day. And if you ever meet him around Lake Forest, don’t forget to say “ball”—you just might make a new best friend.
