Roots Painting was founded by me, Matt Hanson, and is built on a legacy of craftsmanship. I am a third-generation home improvement professional who began painting houses with my grandpa at the age of 14. After that, I spent seven years working in my dad’s construction company, gaining hands-on experience in various areas, including framing and finish carpentry.

I grew up in Menominee, Michigan — a small town in the Upper Peninsula — and come from a long line of tradesmen. My grandpa, a high school shop teacher who painted houses during the summer, first introduced me to the trade when I was 14. I started painting with him and later spent seven years working in my dad’s construction company, gaining hands-on experience in everything from framing to finish carpentry. Working side by side with family taught me not just the skills, but the pride that comes with doing a job right. I also worked a range of other jobs — farming, milking cows, hauling pumpkins — and even played some college baseball in Minnesota. After a few summers learning the ropes, I went full-time in construction, helping build everything from homes to clinics. At 23, I decided to take everything I had learned and start my own painting business. Now I run Roots Painting with those same family values — hard work, doing things the right way, and always treating people with respect. The name “Roots” is more than just a brand — it’s a tribute to where I came from and the foundation that shaped me.

I moved to Green Bay to grow my business in a place that values quality work and community. It’s been a great fit for what I wanted to build with Roots Painting. The best part of being here, though, has been meeting my girlfriend, Laken — she’s played a big role in both my life and the business.

Outside of work, I love spending time outdoors — golfing, fishing, and checking out local businesses. The people here are genuinely kind, and that’s made it feel like the right place to put down roots.

Whether it’s interior or exterior painting, the quality of the finished product is only as good as the prep that goes into it. That means cleaning surfaces, repairing damage, and using the right primers, especially with Wisconsin’s wild weather shifts that can be tough on paint.
