AACF Creates Thriving Communities

At the Asian American Center of Frederick (AACF), our mission is to enhance, empower, and enrich the lives of immigrants and minorities.

We work to remove barriers, connect people to resources, and create opportunities for individuals to thrive in their new community. When everyone has access to opportunity, the entire community grows stronger.

Founded in 2004 by Elizabeth Chung, AACF began as a small after-school program for immigrant families. Elizabeth, who immigrated from Hong Kong in 1970, saw firsthand the challenges newcomers face including language barriers, unfamiliar systems, and limited access to resources. Her vision has grown into a comprehensive organization with more than 35 employees, over 200 volunteers, and the ability to communicate in more than 40 languages representing over 25 countries.

Our programs address education, citizenship, workforce development, and health. The Early Childhood Education program gives children a strong start while parents learn skills in parenting, cooking, gardening, and English as a Second Language. The Retired Senior Volunteer Program and Senior Companion Program create opportunities for older adults to contribute while helping seniors with errands and companionship. Through our Citizen Integration Services (CIS) program, hundreds have become U.S. citizens with the support of civics and language instruction. Workforce readiness is developed through the Workforce Integration Service for Empowerment, which partners with local businesses for on-the-job training. Our Community Health Worker program also plays a vital role by connecting people to trusted healthcare resources.

AACF strengthens the community through events that educate, celebrate, and connect. For 17 years, our Frederick Community Health Fair has provided free screenings and referrals to thousands of residents. Cultural celebrations such as Asia on the Creek, International Women’s Day, and the Mid-Autumn Festival showcase the diversity that makes Frederick a vibrant place to live.

Our work is possible through partnerships, volunteers, and the generosity of those who believe in our mission. There are many ways to get involved including volunteering, attending an event, sponsoring a program, or donating. Together, we can continue Elizabeth’s mission and ensure Frederick remains a place where everyone has the chance to succeed.
