The Market at Deere Valley Farm
Rooted in a Century of Family Farming
The Baker family has worked the fields of Deere Valley Farm for nearly 100 years, tending grain, hay, and livestock with dedication passed down through generations. Today, Rob Baker works alongside his father, Paul, and his sons, Josh and Zack, in the fields, while Rob’s mother, Nancy, manages the office and his wife, Samantha, runs The Market at Deere Valley Farm.
“Third, fourth, and fifth generations of the Baker family are still working this farm,” Samantha explained. “It’s very much a family effort, and it’s special to see everyone involved in different ways.” Rob and Samantha both attended the University of Maryland, and their sons are graduates of UMD as well. For the Bakers, farming is a family legacy deeply tied to the land and the community.
From Fields to Market
Though Deere Valley Farm has been operating for nearly a century, The Market opened its doors in 2023. The idea, however, had been growing for years. “Differentiation is vital in agriculture,” Samantha shared. “When one area of operation struggles due to weather, commodity prices, or other uncontrollable factors, the loss doesn’t feel as devastating. The market allows income to become a little more consistent and stable.”
The Market offers farm-raised beef, pork, lamb, and goat, giving customers direct access to meat that is both local and responsibly raised. Shelves are also stocked with products from other small producers, making the market a hub for regional agriculture. A seasonal ice cream window adds a sweet bonus that has quickly become a favorite stop for families during the warmer months.
For Samantha, the market is about much more than transactions. “The market allows us to connect with other producers in the area and provide the opportunity for their products to be visible to the consumer,” she said. “It’s a place where you can taste quality and know exactly where it came from.”
A Unique Community Connection
What makes The Market truly special is its strong connection to the community. “We are a year-round farm market,” Samantha explained. “We are unique in our local offerings as well.”
That uniqueness includes a thoughtful approach to giving back. “Our crew at the ice cream window does not accept tips. Instead, every day we accept donations to a local nonprofit that changes monthly,” Samantha shared. This approach has not only supported local charities but has also given customers a sense of participating in something meaningful.
The Bakers also partner with schools and community organizations to promote awareness of agriculture. “We want people to understand where their food comes from and the value of supporting local farms,” Samantha said. “If kids grow up seeing the importance of farming, that appreciation will stay with them.”
Looking Ahead
The Bakers are excited about what the future holds. “We have opened our own food truck this fall that sells our prepared meats like Italian sausages, lamb sliders, short ribs, and more,” Samantha said. “We are looking forward to expanding its visibility in 2026.” The food truck not only showcases their meats in creative ways but also brings the farm’s products directly to new audiences.
As they approach the farm’s one century milestone, the Bakers remain committed to local farming and serving quality products. “Buying direct from producers is healthier and more economically beneficial for your community,” Samantha advised. “Even buying one product regularly from a small farm or producer creates a huge impact.”
It’s a philosophy that reflects the family’s belief that farming is about more than crops and livestock - it’s about connection. Through The Market at Deere Valley Farm, the Bakers are ensuring that legacy continues for generations to come.
