The Frederick Children’s Chorus

Where Singing Creates Community

The Frederick Children’s Chorus is a non-profit, non-auditioned youth choir that has been “raising young voices in song” since 1985. Founded by Judith DuBose, a devoted public school music teacher, the chorus began with her vision of uniting children through the joyful exploration and celebration of singing. Today, we continue that mission by providing a nurturing environment for singers from infancy through age 18, focusing on musical growth, healthy technique, and performance confidence. Financial aid ensures every child can participate, regardless of circumstance.

Our tiered programming provides a supportive path for young musicians. Little Music Makers introduces infants and early elementary children to music through singing, rhythm, and movement. The Training Chorus builds on these foundations for students in grades 3 - 5, teaching harmony and ensemble skills. Middle schoolers advance to the Concert Chorus, developing musicianship and sight-singing, while the Chamber Singers challenge high school students with advanced repertoire and artistry.

My journey with the Chorus began while I was teaching high school music in Howard County. During that time, I served the Chorus for four years as a musicianship teacher and in various director roles. This July, I was honored to become Artistic Director. In this role, I guide repertoire, rehearsals, and performances that nurture young singers’ growth and help them build meaningful connections with each other and the community. I’ve always told my students, “What I enjoy most about music is who I create it with.” Supporting the youth of Frederick through music is truly a privilege.

I spent my own formative years in a similar chorus in Lawrence, Kansas, an experience that changed my life. Singing gave me confidence, lifelong friendships, and a way to see the world. I hope to pass that same gift along to our singers.
