A Special History of the Lakeside Country Club

In 1910, a group of Tacoma bachelors purchased waterfront property for $7,600 on American Lake. They built a 3-story lakefront clubhouse for entertaining.  Soon the bachelors married and brought their families to enjoy tent camping on the weekends. In addition to canoeing and swimming, members played tennis and golf. In 1914 there was a 9-hole golf course located across Veterans Drive bordering Interlaaken Drive. The women met daily at 9:00 am for a round of golf.
Over the years, the Lakeside Country Club progressed from tent houses to cottages. The cottages have since been remodeled or replaced with new construction and became full-time residences. Several homes are currently on the Lakewood, WA Historic Registry. On April 12, 1910, the Lakeside Country Club was incorporated and is registered as a 501(c)(7) which promotes social activities for its members. Currently there are 19 member-residences that share and appreciate the beauty of this unique lakefront community. A rare opportunity awaits.
