World Language Connection

¡Bienvenidos de nuevo!
 Welcome back!

After a pause for the pandemic, we are thrilled to announce the relaunch of World Language Connection (WLC) to in the primary schools of Gig Harbor, Tacoma, and University Place, with plans to bring our program to Lakewood schools. Parents and students are buzzing with excitement as classes have resumed, and we work to fulfill our mission of providing a positive, fun, and enriching language learning experience. Whether your child is a returning student or joining us for the first time, the joy of learning and cultural exploration awaits him or her.  WLC is more than just a language program; it's a community, and we're eager to welcome you into our fold. Stay tuned for updates on class schedules, special events, and the vibrant language experiences that lie ahead. The journey continues, and we can't wait to share it with you. Let's rekindle the excitement of language learning together!

World Language Connection’s mission is:
“Providing a positive, fun, safe and enriching learning experience, where students are introduced to world languages and cultures, and encouraged to cultivate these as life-long interests.”

When students are exposed to language education at an early age, they are one step closer to becoming a thriving member of a global community.  Our WLC curriculum not only teaches invaluable communication skills, but also an awareness and understanding of other peoples and cultures. Growing and nurturing these abilities in our community will only help to grow and nurture the community itself.

The Impact of Learning Early
The importance of learning a second language at a young age cannot be overstated. Studies show that early language acquisition enhances cognitive abilities, creativity, and problem-solving skills. Moreover, it lays the foundation for a broader worldview and promotes open-mindedness.

Our instructors
Our diverse staff comprises mostly native speakers with a passion for teaching language and culture. Although teacher certification is valuable it is not required, as WLC values the unique perspectives and cultural richness that native speakers bring to the classroom. We want WLC students exposed to authenticity and passion along their language-learning journey.
Many of our instructors have teaching degrees from their countries of origin, while others are certified teachers in this country. The program provides group training sessions prior to the start of school, as well as ongoing training covering a range of topics, from teaching techniques to classroom management, intensive coaching, and feedback, especially for the new instructors. Our instructors follow a curriculum with a comprehensive and detailed lesson plan. Several instructors who began teaching in the WLC program have gone on to work as Spanish teachers in various public and private schools in and around Tacoma and Gig Harbor.

Our System
This program focuses on comprehension of preceding speech. We do not force students to speak if they are not ready. We do not focus on reading or writing. We focus on the students responding to the vocabulary and having fun learning, as our program strives to simulate the way we learn our native language, through games, songs, and activities. The Curriculums Format has 10 units each, with a different vocabulary theme and cultural component emphasized in each unit. The two main components of this system are:
1-Total Physical Response (TPR).
2-Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS).
World Language Connection has offered classes in languages and culture from Seattle to Olympia since its inception as World Language and Cultural Ambassadors more than 30 years ago. Originally based in Seattle, the program relocated to Tacoma and became Chi-Chack Community Language Center about 8 years ago, focusing its resources on growing the program around Tacoma and Gig Harbor. Then, just prior to the pandemic, our non-profit was rebranded as World Language Connection and set up shop in Lakewood. Throughout these transitions, WLC has maintained the same systems; from the mission statement to program goals, to teaching techniques and its curriculum. WLC has fostered continuity through decades of dedicated and devoted work and has proven successful time and again.
