Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers, affecting about one in eight men during their lifetime. In Northern Nevada, a group of dedicated providers and community members are stepping up to change that—and they’re inviting you to do the same.

 

Created by Urology Nevada and Oncology Nevada, the Urology Nevada Cancer Foundation (UNCF) is devoted to improving access, education and support for local patients affected by urologic cancers—including prostate cancer. On Saturday, August 23, at Idlewild Park, the UNCF 5K for Prostate Cancer will bring together families, survivors and supporters. This walk/run event helps fund critical resources and comprehensive care for community members facing a diagnosis, as well as their families.

 

Support doesn’t stop at the finish line. Urology Nevada will also provide free prostate cancer screenings throughout September for those who attend the walk/run and sign up for a PSA test. This simple blood test can detect prostate cancer early, when it’s most treatable. Men over 50, or 45 and at high risk (African American or have a family history), should get screened annually.

 

Additionally, Oncology Nevada offers a monthly Prostate Cancer Support Group, open to anyone affected by the disease. Held on the first Thursday of the month, the group provides a compassionate space for connection and healing.

 

Whether you join as a walker, runner or support from the sidelines, your presence helps ensure no one in your community faces prostate cancer alone.
