Allan Salmon
United States Marine Corps | Tanker
What inspired you to join the military?
From a young age, I wanted to serve my country. I was fascinated by the uniforms and being in the Military. My Brother and all of my friends would play like we were in the Army and go on missions around town.
How long did you serve and where?
I served 6 years. After boot camp in San Diego California I went to Tank School in Fort Knox Kentucky. My first duty station was Guantanamo Bay Cuba and then to Twentynine Palms California. While stationed in Twentynine Palms, I deployed to the Persian Gulf for Desert Shield/Desert Storm. When I got back from the War, I went to many different military schools around the country.
What lessons or values did you carry with you from your military service into civilian life?
Always be on time (my wife Betty sometimes gets annoyed), always respect your elders, and love your country!
What does being a veteran mean to you personally?
It means that I did something that few others have done. I have sacrificed being away from my family and friends so that this country will continue to be the greatest in the history of the world.
Who played an important role in your journey?
I've served with a lot of great men that most people will never know their name but impacted my life. My Mother also had an impact because I always looked forward to talking with her while I was away in the war.
What advice would you share with younger generations considering military service?
Try to get an education first or try to get a good job in the military. It's not all about combat, there's a lot of jobs in the Military that will set you up for life.
What are you most proud of when you look back on your time in the military?
Just being in combat and surviving that, I met so many different people from all over America. I was on the front lines in Desert Storm when we liberated Kuwait and I remember how glad the people were and they cheered. When we got back to the states, people lined the streets to see our buses go by. Also, I am so proud of my Marine Corps service, the brotherhood behind it, and on my off time going out with all of my buddies and raising Cain!
Is there a motto, saying, or piece of wisdom that guides you in life?
Never quit and never surrender!
