From the first issue to the last, 2023 was a year of stories that stirred our souls an forged connections within our neighborhood.

FEBRUARY 1.

Taylor is pursuing her degree in Journalism while both working at a paid internship.

3. Family/Cover Story- Introducing: The Brown Family, John and Teresa Brown are celebrating their 25th anniversary this summer.  Their children are Lauren, 20, and Sophia, 16. Lauren is a sophomore at Missouri State University in Springfield, Missouri. Sophia is a junior at Seminole High.

4. Doing Good In The Neighborhood- Tina rallied her community and inspired a new way to give. By driving out to the community and coordinating donation pick-up days, those seeking to serve their community can do so from their neighborhood.

5. Travel Tales- Mackinac Island, Hans and I had heard that Mackinac Island in upper Michigan was a fun and beautiful place to visit. So, we decided to go see for ourselves. We had planned to go to the Buffalo NY area at the beginning of August 2022 for a high school reunion, so we added 2 nights in Michigan to the beginning of that trip.

APRIL 

1. Travel Tales-Mississippi River Cruise, Hans and I have done several river cruises in Europe but had never done one in the United States.  In December 2022, that changed. We flew to Memphis, Tennessee to cruise from there to New Orleans, Louisiana on the lower Mississippi River.

Family/Cover Story- The Pugh Family, After relocating from Cincinnati, OH in June 2020, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Pugh Family couldn’t be more thrilled to land in Lake Forest and enjoy the much sunnier Florida weather. Jeff, Julie, Austin and Caleb quickly met and befriended many families and kids in the neighborhood.

Annual Melissa’s Race 5K Works to Raise Awareness for the Nation’s Leading Cause of Cancer Death in Children- One of the largest nonprofit fundraisers dedicated to brain cancer is from Lake Forest. Melissa's Race has raised nearly a half million dollars towards brain cancer research since 2016 and attracts participants from all over the nation.  

2. Precious Pets- 8 Puppies at Once, Maze was profiled a few months ago in Stroll Magazine and shortly after we discovered that she was going to have 5 puppies.

5. Family/Cover Story- Meet The Breys, I’m 54 & and my wife Tracy is 56.  We will be celebrating our 26th Anniversary this summer. We have 2 children: Hailey is 21 and Joshua is 17.

Forrest (because he was found in Lake Forest and because he’s a runner- ‘Run, Forrest, run!’)Details - breed, age, gender, type, etc. Scarlet is a Papillon. She is 13 years old

Travel Tales-Eastern Danube River Cruise,  When one speaks of doing a river cruise on Europe’s Danube River, it usually is in relation to the western part of the river (e.g. between Regensburg and Budapest). We had done that particular cruise twice and decided this time to try the less traveled part: from Bucharest, Romania to Budapest, Hungary. We are Jane and Hans DeVaughn, and this was our first trip out of the U.S. since Hans had his knee replacement in January 2023.

We are Hans and Jane DeVaughn and we finally completed one of those trips in November of 2022 - a river cruise on the Seine from Paris to the beaches of Normandy.

He's named after Stanley Park in Vancouver, Canada because that's one of our favorite places to visit (and because Sam is a big hockey fan, so the Stanley Cup served as inspiration for Stanley's name too!)

Lake Forest's New Butterfly Garden, 
Our Butterfly Garden is the newest addition. With the help of Lukas Nursery and the Sanford Ixora Garden Club, we have "shrunk our grass" and replaced it with many varieties of native pollinator plants where butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds can find food. It has quickly become a tiny park where children learn about the life cycles of critters and neighbors stop to chat in a tranquil space.

Doing Good In The Community- Onto the Next Chapter: Sanford Bookstore Finds New Home Downtown, There will be a lot to write about the COVID-19 pandemic in history books: The tragic loss of life, the term ‘social distancing,’ and the supply chain issues we still face today. But for Sarai Rivera, the pandemic made her re-evaluate her life. “We all were faced with life not being guaranteed, and everything was completely different, so it changed our perspectives,” she said.

DECEMBER

When Hans and I think about what trips/tours we would like to book, I’m always looking for those which have what I call a “wow factor.” When we return home, I like to be able to say
“Wow! We got to ________ (fill in the blank) on this trip!”  Our recent trip to the Canadian Rockies was, in my opinion, filled with “wow factor” moments. The scenery day after day was breathtaking.
