Concerned about aging in place, resident Sandra Horne turned to Margie Bauman and her team at MB Design & Construction to create a more modern space that would function well as they got older. The team achieved this by rearranging the fixtures, widening shower access and updating finishes.

Along with the other requests, the Hornes did not like the dark shower space. In order to make the shower more functional if a walking aid was to be used, the large jacuzzi bathtub was eliminated in favor of a larger, more open shower. The existing shower plumbing was flipped to the other side of the wall and the existing drain from the bathtub was used. The new alcove shower, with a large window on one side and frameless glass on the other, felt much more open and welcoming than the small, completely enclosed corner shower. The previous shower space was then opened up to provide a full wall of storage and a small sit-down vanity area. 

All of the fixtures and finishes were updated with aging in mind. The faucet handles, shower handles, and cabinet hardware were all chosen for the style and for the fact that those levers, pulls and knobs would be easy to grasp and manipulate for older joints. The white countertop looks great with the non-slip porcelain floor tile, but it also provides a contrast to the gray vanity, making it easier to see.
