The 1828 Madison County Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to honoring, supporting, and empowering the men and women who serve as first responders in Madison County, Mississippi. Its name reflects the history of the county, established in 1828, and the project’s commitment to those who protect and serve the community each day.
The mission is simple: to protect and serve those who protect and serve. The organization provides life insurance policies at no cost to certified first responders in Madison County, giving families peace of mind. It also offers mental health and wellness support, works to break the stigma surrounding mental health in first responder communities, funds training programs that strengthen safety and skills, and assists families during times of critical need.
Leadership is central to the project’s impact. 1828 is led by individuals who have served, worked alongside first responders, or supported family members who serve. The board includes Executive Director Blake Stanley (iDefend, LLC); President Kristy Daniels (Origin Bank); Vice-President Bryan Wheeler (Southern Connection Police Supply); Secretary/Treasurer Steven Pickett (MS Centers of Police & Sheriffs); Mike and Enjoli Nolen (Patterson Dental and Luckett Land Title); Amanda Culbertson (Southern Farm Bureau); Gretchen Butler (Huntington Bank); and Grant Montgomery (Huntington Bank). Their shared experience drives their commitment.
With the help of donors, the organization has funded more than 200 life insurance policies for certified law enforcement officers, securing coverage for the next three years. The goal is to expand coverage to all certified first responders in Madison county.
To raise funds, 1828 hosted its inaugural Bourbon & Badges Tasting Event, featuring bourbon, local brews, food, and raffle prizes. The event marked the start of ongoing fundraising efforts. In May 2026, the organization will partner with the Public Safety Summit to host speaker Travis Howze in Flowood, continuing its focus on mental health and family support.
