Meet Stu McMichael & Lucinda Crabtree

Lucinda, Stu and their rescue terrier, Lucky, live lakeside on Beachtree in a beautifully updated, modern home with an outdoor oasis to match.  Stu has 3 children; Lucinda has 6 grandchildren, and the couple share 3 great-grandchildren.

Lucinda was born in Oklahoma, and Stu in New York.  They have both lived in Virginia for over sixty years.

They rented a house on the other side of the lake for a year in 1990, then purchased their current home in 1991. Stu measured the distance from his office and Lucinda's, and they picked a place that was a ten-minute commute for both.  They toured and rented their first home at midnight (after work) and had no idea it was on a lake until the next morning when Stu came back to the house, called Lucinda and said, "Did you know there was a lake behind this house?" The rest is history!

Stu & Lucinda's Careers

Stu owned a Union printing company until 2002, then joined Lucinda’s marketing communications firm specializing in science and science education. They gave the company to an employee and retired in March 2020.  "Best decision EVER," says Lucinda.  They sold their commercial building in Falls Church and purchased a second home in Sedona, AZ.  It is an Air BnB when they are not there. They love and enjoy both of their stunning homes for their emphasis on the natural elements blending with a living environment.

Stu and Lucinda worked very long hours in their careers and have been enjoying their time in retirement to be with family, friends and neighbors.

In 2022, they took both homes solar, generating 128% of their current need and have just added an Electric Vehicle (EV) to their garage.  Each of their major appliances will be converted to electric as they expire. The couple is passionate about the protection of the environment, with a strong legacy of volunteering their time and knowledge. They're thrilled to be continuing that into their retirement.

Family

The couple met when Lucinda was attempting to get free printing from Stu's company back in 1988.  "He never gave me any even after we married," jokes Lucinda.  He already had 3 grown children when they met, and could not have any more babies, so he promised Lucinda the grandchildren.  "We have nurtured a unique relationship with each of them, culminating with a two-week trip without their parents in a place of their choosing; Africa twice, Costa Rica, China, France and Iceland/Lapland," shares Lucinda. "We love travel and learning."

We have hosted a family picnic every year since 1991.   Our family just loves the lake and treasures the memories we have made here.  They come from up and down the East Coast and stay 3 days.

Education

Lucinda has always loved nature and beauty, so it was a natural fit for her to enter the arts and science classes in school.  "I bumped around for a few years till a recession left me without a job," she says. "That’s when I started my own company."

Stu had a family history with the printing industry.  He followed in his grandfather’s footsteps and went to the New York school of Printing in New York City.

"Both Stu and I loved the industry and feel fortunate to have been a part of it," says Lucinda. "Stu had the first environmentally friendly printing company in Virginia and won many awards for his innovations in lowering alcohol use, recyclables and soybean inks."

Lucinda’s firm was well-known for unique clients, stylish designs and being one of the first woman-owned communications firms locally.  "We both enjoyed success and industry acknowledgments by our peers," says Lucinda.

Travel

Stu and Lucinda love to travel the world.  Together, they have countless adventures and stories to match.  "Our favorite continent is Africa, visiting there seven times and experiencing nine countries," shares Lucinda.  "Hopefully, we have more adventures ahead.  We love giving back; between the two of us, we have served on over a dozen Boards.  We were international judges for FIRST robotics for 20 years, helping the next generation learn about business and engineering. We feel strongly that volunteering is the way to grow organizations want to encourage more people to do so.  We most always say YES."

Currently, Stu and Lucinda are relaxing for the first time in their busy lives.  "Our gift is time to share with family and friends," says Lucinda. "We try not to rush through life anymore and savor every drop.  We are still in transition to retirement but starting to think about other ways to help our world thrive."
