Meet the Smith Family!

Katie and Lucas moved to Kings Point one year ago with their daughters, Caroline (14), Ellie (12), and Anna (10). They share their home on Country Falls Lane with their pet rabbits, Moo and Roo. They are rescue rabbits and love that their new house has a sunroom just for them! They love running around the backyard and movie nights on Friday. Anna would love having a dog but Ellie and Lucas are very allergic so that’s not an option for their family. Anna talks about having a farm when she grows up so that she can have all different kinds of animals!

Katie was originally born and raised in Baton Rouge but moved to Kingwood in 1995. She tells us, “I loved living in Kings Point as a teenager! It’s amazing how much it has grown since the 1990s. I graduated from KHS in 1998.” Lucas was born in New Mexico and moved around as a child because his dad was in the Air Force. He lived in San Antonio for his teen years and graduated from Taft High School in 1998. Both Katie and Lucas are Class of ‘02 graduates from Texas A&M. They had classes together freshman year but didn’t meet until years later through a mutual friend after watching the 2003 SEC Championship. Later that same evening, they both ended up at the Marquis II in Rice Village and have been together since. Katie received my Master’s from Sam Houston State University and Lucas received Master’s degrees from University of Houston and Creighton University. They tell us, “We cheer for lots of schools!”

The Smiths were married at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Houston in June of 2008 and moved to a brownstone in Rice Military. They loved living in the middle of Houston’s hot spots but decided to move to Eagle Springs (Atascocita) when they started having children. They chose Eagle Springs because many of their college friends lived there and it was close to Katie’s parents, who still live in Kings Point. They started to outgrow their house at the same time they realized they wanted to be closer to their church (St. Martha’s) and Katie’s parents. They started looking for a home in KP in the fall of 2023. After a lengthy search they finally found one in the spring of 2024.

Katie began her career as a 3rd grade teacher at Greentree Elementary in 2003. She later became a math and science specialist at Park Lakes Elementary before resigning in 2011 when their first daughter was born. She returned to teaching in 2022 as a 5th grade teacher at Eagle Springs Elementary. She recalls, “It was so wonderful to teach where my girls went to school! I resigned again last spring to help our family transition to Kingwood.” Lucas began his career as a Chemical engineer and later moved to Petroleum engineering after receiving his Master’s degree in 2009. He has worked for a few companies in the oil and gas industry since then but now works for Occidental Petroleum in the Woodlands. He has been there for six years and works as a Reserves Manager for the Gulf of Mexico.

Their oldest daughter, Caroline, is an 8th grader at RMS and will attend KPHS in the fall. She is a member of the RMS choir and volunteers with NCL. She is also an altar server at St Martha Catholic Church. Ellie is a 6th grader at RMS, and Anna is a 4th grader at DWE. Ellie and Anna are both cheerleaders with Caliber Cheer at Rowland Ballard.

Lucas and Katie are both members of the SMCC ACTS community. They enjoy the fellowship it brings! Lucas also volunteers for the Kolbe ministry which brings ACTS retreats to the male inmates in Huntsville. Katie volunteers with NCL and at RMS and DWE. They are also both avid readers and enjoy working in the yard to relax.
As a family the Smiths enjoy swimming, riding bikes, playing board games, cooking, and playing outside. They also love to travel! Katie tells us, “Colorado is our all-time favorite but New England is a close 2nd. We had the chance to spend 2 weeks there last summer and fell in love with Maine and Rhode Island. It’s hard to come back to Texas weather after visiting any of those places.”

When they are home, they enjoy frequenting some of their favorite restaurants such as Hacienda Palomas, DiMaria, and Torchy’s. You can probably tell they really love Mexican food! When cooking at home, Katie’s gumbo is always a favorite, along with chicken pot pie and taco night. Friday night is always movie and pizza night at their house. They order pizza and watch movies while recovering from a long week. They have a house rule that everyone in the family has to be home on Friday night but friends are welcome to join! Katies shares, “We bought our house with the intention of filling it with family and friends. It’s been great watching that dream become a reality! The rabbits enjoy movie nights the most because they eat the popcorn that gets dropped on the floor.”

Some of their favorite movies are Home Alone and the Marvel films. Their go to TV shows include Gilmore Girls (on girls’ nights), Bluey, Yellowstone, Curb Your Enthusiasm, and Schitt’s Creek. If they’re watching sports they are likely cheering on Texas Aggies (Katie adds, “even when they break our hearts”), Houston Texans, Houston Dash and Dynamo, and the Tottenham Hotspurs.

Katie shares, “The best part of living in KP is that we are a mile from my parents who live on Beacon Falls. The girls ride their bikes there to get their ice cream and candy fix! My sister lives just over a mile away in Riverchase. We are so blessed to live so close to family. We also love the miles of greenbelts and beautiful greenery all around us.”
