Meet the Butler Family, Owners of the Buenos Grill

Celebrating 25 Years!

We are so excited to be celebrating Buenos Grill’s 25th Year Anniversary as your locally owned Baja-Style Taqueria. Thinking back to April 1999 when we opened our doors to an enthusiastic crowd, we are filled with gratitude. We are humbled by the community’s support, the dedication of our terrific staff, all of our friends and family, and everyone who played a part in helping us realize our dream in Reno. Many of you were homeowners in Southwest Reno and have been coming into our small business at Mayberry Landing for the past 25 years. We thank you for your friendship and patronage, and we welcome new and old neighbors alike to come in and make it a “Buenos” Day!

It has been an honor to serve the community the Baja California-style Mexican food that we love. Our restaurant concept of a made-from-scratch menu featuring light and healthy recipes and a dine-in or takeout quick-service business model was completely new and different in 1999. Greg, coming from a full-service dining background, wanted to create a quality dining experience that was more accessible and affordable. Our son, Cole was two years old when we first opened our doors. He is now 27 and is a huge part of our success story. What makes Buenos Grill special is that on any given day, one of our family members, Mimi, Greg, or Cole, is here to take your order. We work shoulder to shoulder with our employees to deliver great customer service and consistent food quality in a clean, coastal-inspired environment.

Greg and I met at UNR and fell in love with each other and with Mexican food while dating. In 1986 we were married and had our honeymoon in Mazatlán. Soon after, we moved to Southern California, a stone’s throw from where Greg grew up enjoying Mexican food in Huntington Beach, California.  In his youth, Greg would go camping in Northern Baja California and enjoy the fresh seafood purveyors on the beach. By high school, he was frying up his own tortilla chips and making quesadillas and tacos. We both loved fish tacos, so there was no question that they would be a key part of our menu. Buenos Grill’s signature fish taco, “The Buenos” is grilled fish with mango salsa, while “The Baja” is beer-battered crispy fish, and “The Del Mar” is spice-rubbed and blackened salmon. Since day one, our fish tacos have been consistent best sellers.

After pursuing our careers, we moved back to Reno in 1999 with the plan to open Buenos Grill. We purchased our home in the neighborhood, keeping ourselves within walking distance of Mayberry Landing. Our children received their amazing educations at Roy Gomm, Swope, Reno High, and the University of Nevada. When Cole was in kindergarten, he wanted to work with his dad and would stand on a step stool behind the register and help take customer’s orders. His interest in the restaurant business started early, and he has been working at Buenos Grill ever since. When you next stop by, make sure to try the “Buenos Breeze,” our rum punch that Cole created, featuring coconut cream and pineapple. Our daughter Hannah inspired us to add vegan menu options including the Vegan Enchiladas and three 100% plant-based tacos.

Since its founding, Buenos Grill has been committed to sustainability, recycling, conservation of resources and sourcing recipe ingredients locally (as much as possible). We serve our food in the restaurant using reusable plates, bowls, glassware and utensils. We have limited our single-use items to takeout orders only, and we have never used Styrofoam containers. We have been members of the Reno-Sparks Chamber of Commerce since we opened, and through our membership discovered the Nevada Green Dining program and NV Green Business Network. In April 2023, after 24 years of being eco-friendly, these organizations recognized and certified our sustainability and green practices. See you soon...and let us know that you saw this article.
