A Garden of Serenity
Hellen Willett Jose’s Peaceful Refuge

In just two and a half years on Isle of Hope, Hellen Willett Jose has transformed her yard into a haven of calm and quiet beauty. Every element in her garden—from the stately Japanese maple transplanted from the woods to the newly planted olive tree—has been chosen with intention. “Our yard is our place of serenity,” she says. “We wanted to create a sense of peace.”
Installed entirely by hand, Hellen’s landscape is a true labor of love. Herb Creek Landscape Supply is her go-to source for plants and materials, but the design and care are all personal. She gravitates toward plants with meaning—olive trees for peace, hydrangeas for calm, a flourishing lime and fig tree that bring a sense of accomplishment and growth.
One of the most charming spots in the yard is the outdoor shower area, where herbs thrive in tucked-away containers. “It’s a sweet space for the smaller plants,” she notes.
Her advice to others: don’t be afraid to dig in. “Get your hands in the dirt, and be willing to nurture,” she says. “There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing something you planted grow.” She also recommends investing in professional lawn care—it’s worth every penny.
Pest control is one of the only ongoing challenges, but Hellen has found success with mole deterrent stakes that emit vibrations inaudible to humans. “The progress has been amazing,” she says.
Next on her list? Raised vegetable beds, part of a growing interest in farm-to-table living. Whether it's herbs by the shower or figs by the fence, every plant in Hellen’s garden tells a story—and together, they speak peace.
