Brody Smoak
Stepping Up to the Plate
At 11 years old, Isle of Hope resident Brody Smoak is already making a name for himself on the field. A fifth grader, Brody has lived on the island for six years and enjoys the freedom of riding his bike with friends and discovering new corners of the neighborhood. What he appreciates most, however, is the kindness of the people who call Isle of Hope home.
Brody stays busy competing in two sports — baseball and football — but baseball holds a special place in his heart. He plays second base for USA Prime 12U Select, a local travel baseball team, and began swinging a bat when he was just 6 years old. His father first introduced him to the game and has remained one of his biggest supporters, even coaching many of his teams along the way.
Family ties show up in another meaningful way on the field. Brody proudly wears jersey No. 33, the same number his dad wore when he played. When they are not practicing or heading to the batting cages, the two enjoy cheering on the Georgia Bulldogs and the Atlanta Braves together. Brody’s favorite professional player is Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies.
Although baseball is his favorite sport, Brody recently celebrated a memorable milestone in football as well. In his first season playing for Calvary Day School, his team captured the SPAL Championship — a moment he says stands out as one of his favorite sports memories so far.
Balancing school and athletics takes planning, so Brody focuses on completing homework and studying a little each day. Through sports, he says he has learned that determination and faith can take him far.
Looking ahead, Brody hopes his hard work will one day lead to a college scholarship and even a professional baseball career. His advice to other young athletes is simple: Never give up chasing your dreams.
