Meet Your Neighbors: The Fanning Family

In just two short years, the Fanning family has already made their mark in Inverness, embracing the close-knit, welcoming spirit that makes this community so special. Meet Kevin (38) and Avery (37) Fanning, and their daughter Claire, who recently turned two in April, along with their energetic Brittany Spaniel, Kinzie.
Kevin grew up right here in Inverness, and his parents, Kevin and Kathy Fanning, still live nearby in McIntosh. Avery, originally from the Philadelphia Main Line suburbs, brings a touch of East Coast charm to the Midwest. Drawn by the excellent schools, the sense of community, and the beautiful, bucolic setting, Kevin and Avery decided Inverness was the perfect place to plant their roots.
The Fannings are a power couple both in education and career. Kevin attended the University of Illinois for his undergraduate and master's degrees before earning his law degree at DePaul University. He is the founder and owner of Fanning Law, a law firm in the Chicago Loop focused on Illinois property tax law, and many of his first clients were Inverness residents! Avery studied at the University of Pennsylvania and later earned her MBA from the University of Virginia. Today, she’s a Director at Salesforce, working in Business Value Services.
Their love story began during the pandemic when Avery moved from Manhattan to Chicago. A dating app helped their paths cross, and the rest, as they say, is history!
Little Claire keeps them busy — she attends daycare at Bright Horizons in Deer Park and enjoys being outdoors, playing with Kinzie, and watching her favorite movie, Tangled. Speaking of Kinzie, the 2½-year-old Brittany Spaniel is always full of energy, sprinting around the house and indulging her hunting instincts.
When it comes to hobbies and talents, the Fannings are an active bunch. Kevin and Avery enjoy playing tennis together at Inverness Golf Club, where Kevin also plays golf and paddle tennis - and recently helped his men’s paddle team win their series championship! Avery stays fit by training at The Den in Barrington. Kevin also mentors law students and young attorneys, sharing his experience and passion for the legal profession.
The Fannings cherish celebrating holidays by balancing time between Kevin’s family here and Avery’s back East. This Easter, both sides celebrated together.
Locally, the Fannings enjoy dining at Region, Mago, and Giostra. Weekends often include family outings to Heinen’s in Barrington, where Claire loves making new friends in the aisles. Kinzie gets pampered at The Grooming Lodge, and on beautiful days, the whole family heads to the Forest Preserve for long walks.
Community involvement is important to the Fannings. They’re members of St. Anne’s Parish, where they’ve begun volunteering through Catholic Charities. Kevin also fundraises for Lurie Children’s Hospital — a cause that is deeply personal to him, after they saved his life as a child.
One of their favorite Inverness memories happened shortly after they moved in, when neighbors Tom and Kathy Roth stopped by to introduce themselves after spotting Kinzie playing in the yard. Tom and Kathy had five Brittany Spaniels over the years, so they shared stories about the high-energy breed. The meeting sparked a new friendship and deepened their sense of belonging. Kevin and Tom now often cross paths on walks and even play golf together at the Inverness Golf Club in the men’s league.
The Fannings love the warmth of their neighborhood, where a friendly wave from a passerby is the norm. They are proud to call Inverness home and look forward to many more years of making memories and giving back to the community they love.
